Serious electrical woes, need help soon i have no car to drive!
Howdy,
Here goes my story. I drove my car to my gf's, all was well. After leaving her place i went to start my car. It started, but sounded like it was running half ass. While it was running it was also still trying to start itself at the same time. This resulted in a frightening sound coming from my car.
I tried to turn the car off by removing the key from the ignition. When i did, the car was still running half ass AND still trying to start. The only way i could get the car to turn off was to remove the negative battery terminal.
My car was finally off so i reconnected the negative battery terminal hoping the problem would go away. I went to start up the car but when i turned the key over in the ignition nothing happened. I had no power to the car anywhere including lights and windows, and the car itself made no noise when trying to turn over. The cluster lights were off too with the key turned in the ignition.
I purchased a starter solenoid hoping it would resolve my problem. When i switched it out, i once again had power to the car but only for the first turn of the key! The power doors worked and when the key was in the ignition and turned the ignition lights came on! However when i went to start the car absolutely NOTHING happened. I took the key out, tried to turn it over again, but this time the power was completely gone again! No windows, no cluster lights, nothing.
So now it seems my car is dead and I'm not sure what to check first as i'm not electrically inclined. The guy who towed my car home mentioned something about the starter sticking. Is it possible that for the minute or so my car was running like **** and still trying to start itself that i did some serious eletrical damage?
One thing to note is that the negative battery terminal sparks when i remove and reapply it to the battery. I don't think this is a battery or alternator issue. What should i do?
Sounds like you might have an ignition switch failure. Id get access to it and test out the power. Post the color of the wire at the switch and the positions of the key it had power and Ill (hopefully be able to) tell you what to check next.
I have an alarm on the car to can this be causing problems? Reason i say that is because the car has no power anywhere yet the alarm light mounted near my shifter is flashing as if the alarm was enabled...
the ignition switches on these cars were actually recalled because they were faulty. its probably just the ignition switch.

the alarm could cause the problem....i own an alarm shop. i would go under the dash and look for a black box(most likely held up by wire ties.) unplug it.
also, is this car an automatic? does it have a remote starter?
here are the wire colors for your ign. test with a test light.
12 VOLT CONSTANT YELLOW (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
STARTER RED/LIGHT BLUE (+) or WHITE/PINK (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
STARTER 2 N/A
IGNITION 1 RED/LIGHT GREEN (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
IGNITION 2 BLACK/LIGHT GREEN (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
IGNITION 3 N/A
ACCESSORY/HEATER BLOWER 1 GRAY/YELLOW (+) IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
if its the alarm it will be cause by a starter kill on the starter wire.....follow the starter wire from the ign ....you will find its been cut and connected to another wire. cut this and find the other end cut that and connect them back together
hope this helps, xs
seams like a huge short to ground in the starting circuit, maybe the starter or the harness is grounded or melted to the engine someware like the headers

mine did the same thing. only difference was that i bought a used motor w/ an msd ready to run distributor. and come to find out the internal module was fried. so when i started the car it would start but not turn off until i took the negative off the battery. but before i could determine it was the distributor, i had replaced the ignition switch, starter, starter solenoid, the battery and the alternator. expensive problem huh. but at this point i did not care b/c i had many sleepless nights trying to figure this one out. i would sit on the throne w/ a wiring diagram in my hand. anyway i hope this helps alittle!!!

check the starter wire right next to the right hand motor mount. my 89 gt i had the wire rubbed on the mount and rubbed the insulation off the wiring. mine also did the thing where you shut the car off and the starter is still engaging. ended up frying the wire, starter, solenoid and the battery in the process. pretty sad a week before that happened i replaced the ignition switch but never checked the wiring for the starter . hope you get it figured out.
