I would go with E7TE or AFR head for aftermarket.. and injected would be good but would cost more... I would go with carb...

i like the afr 185 myself. I also had pretty good luck with ported and polished e7's..I say spend the money on some good heads cause building power always goes back to your heads..just my 2 cents..

E7's are pretty decent within the range of stock heads.
They'll still hold you back a bunch if you're wanting to upgrade
the rest of your engine, i.e. cam/headers/intake.
Powerheads does wonders porting stock E7's but are not far costwise
from some of the cheaper aluminum aftermarket heads, although they
do outflow them some.
AFR's are about top shelf for street, but spendy.
The 165's are great for moderately warmed small blocks
in the 302 - 306 range. The 165 with Competition Porting
(stock from AFR) are better. The 185's are good for 331's
thru 351. They all run over $1000 and need upgraded springs.
You can sometimes shop if you have some time and find good
used ones cheaper. I found a pair of lo miles Ebrock's with
the small ports/1.9 intakes for $600, less than Powerheads
ported E7's for over $800.
I've read numerous posts of people with Holley's and Twist Wedges
that, after piling up some miles, have valve guide wear problems.
Due to the valve angles.
Canfield High Ports are very good, but you need a fairly stout motor
to match their flow/rpm characteristics.
The early 302 heads can be made to work wonders, also by Powerheads.
They'll support 400 hp, too, like their ported E7's.
Trick Flow also makes some besides the Twist Wedges that are very good.
Depends on the time you have to shop and your budget, and don't forget
to make your whole combo match regarding rpm range and torque/power curves

I have a 69 block and heads that I was gonna rebuild but I decided I wanted a roller cam and lifters so I am gonna use a 88 HO block. I have a set of E7TE heads that I ground down the bumps in the exhaust ports. I have all the stock fuel injection but would a 4v carb give better performance?
A relatively inexpensive but very good upgrade for a street engine is
the older Explorer intakes, they're very similar in design and flow to
the excellent GT40. You'd want the earlier one with the internal EGr port.
Or a Cobra intake, which is essentially the same thing.
Shop around, you can find them good used.
