Default car runs way too rich. have questions

I bought a 1990 gt convert 5 speed 2 weeks ago. everything has been messed with. anyway, it runs way rich. It smells so bad that i need to showere after going for a ride. I was a car nut from 12 to 23, but now at 39, i have not worked on cars in awhile. I read about setting the TPS. would that cause it to run that rich? it also has headers with no cats and the exhaust end at the front of the rear wheels. the kid i bought it from said they are called dumps. could the flow meter be bad too? are there any sensors I should change. actual Miles are unknown. any help for the new guy would be appreciated. also, He shoved in a 2 row aluminum radiator with dual fans from an escort or something. i reinstalled it like a human being and rewired it. i need to get a 130 amp alternator, but mine has 2 wires and the ones i see have one wire. any suggestions? who sells them cheap?

The running rich issue can be a ton of things, a bad regulator, a stuck injector(s), bad ignition (coil, plugs, wires, tfi), O2 sensors or MAF.

I think you better perform a complete tuneup, check our guides in our TECH SECTION.

Also perform a code scan, you can rent a scanner at autozone.

About the AMP, sorry cant help there.

o2 sensors measure the oxygen in the exaust....it send the data to the computer so it can make changes in the "burn" air fuel mixture. if your o2 is not reading right...your computer could tell the injectors to pulse longer to add more fuel. but you may not need it.
my convertabl was getting 97 mi to the tank, until i fix the o2 problem..now its around 245mi to the tank.
do a key on engine running test. things tend to show themselves this way.

weld a nut to the header pipes and then drill out the center. install your o2's

what good would it be to install O2 sensors on a car without cats? I have the same problem but I'm only missing the rear O2s. Sorry Bondman, I was going to suggest the O2 sensor thing, but I guess I'm late. I don't mean to jack your thread, I just figured it'd be better than making a new one for the same reason as you.
