I want to put a new thermostat in my car. 1993 GT Mustang. Should I go with a 180 or the stock 192. What brand? I need installation instructions or a link with instructions.
Thanks.

I would go with the stock 192* because it is the normal temperrature the engine is supposed to run at. The whole thing about using a lower temp thermostat is so that you can trick the engine into running richer. The computer thinks the engine is not warmed up yet so it runs in open loop mode, which means it doesn't use the O2 sensors to adjust a/f ratio, but relies on fuel maps. I read it is debatable whether this "trick" works or not so I went back to 192* when my 160* went bad. 180* is sord of in between, so the engine tuns cooler, but maybe it doesn't affect a/f ratio that much (?)

Oh yeah, replacing it is pretty straight forward. Drain antifreeze, take the upper rad. hose off at the thermostat housing (some call it water spout) take the two bolts out, take housing off and the thermostat should fall out, or you might have to scrape the gasket in order toget to it. Make sure you install the new one the same way and get a new gasket too. I used black RTV silicone (gasket maker) and put some on both sides of the gasket to make sure everything sealed right. Then put everything back the way it was.
I think I'm going to stick with the 192*. I am replacing it is because my electric fan seems to running way more than it use to. Which leads me to believe that my thermostat is on the way out. With the electric fan running so much , my battery gets drained.
Where should the temp. gauge be at to be considered normal operating tempereture? I have my electric fan set so it comes on at the second line from the bottom (between 7&8 o'clock). Maybe this is too low? I know most vehicles temp. gauges stay right at half (9 aclock) for normal operating temperature.
Thanks for all the help.

Replacing your thermostat is very self explanatory once you look at it. Sort of a PITA but very straight foward. I just replaced my stocker with a 180 and everything is perfect. You can get a regular thermo from any local parts store for a few dollars. Good Luck!
yup....id run that 180 or 192....i know summit carrys the mr.gaskets.....pretty good from what i hear..........
installation...on and off...in and out......
make sure car is coolll........not hot...pull rad cap...disconnect upper hose
loosen up distributor....but make sure you mark it so it goes back exactly where it was.. turn counter clock wise......this is just to make room for wrench.......
unbolt two bolts, remove last 5/8 hose....now slowly pull thermostat housing......water will flow out the bottom.......just relax and let it spill in a container or what ever you have thats usefull.......ok thormastat is out.....
now make sure you see the direction of thermostat .............the new one will have to go in the same direction...with cone side towards radiator..........
before thought...you must get a scraper and clean both intake and thermostat housing side.............take you time........use a scraper, screwdriver, knife, what ever you have handy.......
now that its clean. place new thermostat in just to get and idea of how it goes....some thermostats have a breather on top.......if so it must face up pointing to hoood....ok.
well i asume you have a gasket so using some rtv silicone....place gasket on houseing install new thermostat, Carfully, cone side out.....place bolts and bring them down nice and snug.........
make sure you dont over tight them, houising is not to strong......so nice and firm.. but not loose....now turn distributor tight that down...exactally where it was!!...replace hoses, fill fluids and start engine...........
now let it heat up a bit......once thermostat opens , top it off with about75% water 25%antifreeze or your preferance......check for leaks and your doneskiezzzzzzzzz....good day..hope this kind of helps..
Milodon 180 from Summit, best one i ever bought.
Don't waste your time with a 192 and make sure you get that air lock out when re-fill the motor with water & antifreeze.
