Default Mystery vibration

Well, the car started doing this about 2 weeks ago, and I've chased down all the obvious things that've occured to me.
My car, (93gt, 5sp) has developed a really nasty vibration, especially getting up to speed. It almost feels like a fouled/dead plug. (Already verified thats not the case, along with checking the balencer: no visible wobble)
Second and 3rd gear have the worst vibration, especially when trying to get up to speed. Crusing or slowing down it drops significantly. Also, hitting the clutch makes it drop.
You can also feel the vibration through the shifter, especially coming off the interstate, while coasting. Oddly, when its happening, the driver side mirror shakes badly enought to be useless, but the pass side seems stone solid.

I've also tried revving her up in neutral, the engine doesent seem to stumble/vibrate, but then again its not under load(?)
All the wheel weights are still present, and I just got under her and it appears that the driveshaft weights are still there (I'll doublecheck this weekend when I have time to get the rear into the air and rotate the shaft.

Any ideas?

Thanks
J

Default Vibes

The fact that hitting the clutch cuts out the vibration leads me to believe the problem is downstream from the clutch.

The first thing I would check out would be the driveshaft (which can fail, distort or come unbalanced, as can the yokes at either end).

Next come the U joints.

If the driveshaft and ujoints check out, I'd check out the differential. Jack up the rear, remove the wheels, and take a long hard look at the axles and bearings.

If I had to guess, I'd say it was the driveshaft and/or ujoints.

The clutch is a little more than 2 years old, with very little hard driving.

I took my boss for a lap of the lot at work tonight, and he's swearing its gotta be a loose/bad tranny mount. Just another thing to check this weekend, along with the aforementioned driveshaft parts.

Other than making sure the weights havent slung off the driveshaft, and looking for play in the u-joints, what else can I do without a shop to make sure everythings ok?

Thanks

Your boss may be right. The tranny mount could be bad. If it is, I predict your passenger side motor mount is ALSO bad. You can visually inspect the mounts for cracks in the rubber (as bad as your problem is, I suspect you'll find them even if they aren't the source).

You can jack up the rear end and check a lot of those parts yourself without cracking open the pumpkin. Get a Haynes manual and read the section covering the drivetrain.

Ujoints or driveshaft is still my best guess, but if you're lucky, it may just be the tranny mount. Your boss is not stupid.
