Default MSD 6AL Box Grinding?

Well... let's give you a quick history.

It started about a month ago with the MSD Box that had been in my car for over 8 months. Never had an issue with it, until one day when sitting at a stop-light, my idle starts surging a bit. I turn down the Radio and listen. I hear what appears to be Grinding coming from the Engine. I immediately pull over and pop the hood and just listen. I come to discover that the MSD Multiple Spark Discharge 6AL box is grinding and causing the idle to shoot up.

Easy fix, right? Order a new part and install it. (To keep matters simple I just cut the old wiring and, using connectors, connected it to the new wiring which I also cut... and regret) The car runs smoothly for like half a day... then starts doing the SAME THING AGAIN ! Grinding and causing the idle to shoot up...

Now, given, cutting the old wiring might not have been the best idea, BUT, the theory was sound and it DID work. So, my question is "WTF?"

Why would the box be doing this? Could the wiring be related? Is it some other completely separate issue? Anyone have any experience with this? Suggestions, comments?

SOunds like to me the Box itself has gone bad. You can probaly send it to MSD for reapir..Cheaper than buying a new one!!

But, it was purchased BRAND NEW...

How is it that a part would fail with less than 4 hours of operation? No part is THAT bad..

Any other ideas?

Default MSD Box grinding

Hi! I was curious if you have called MSD Tech about your problem. I have had very great results with those guys, and I am sure they have probably heard every possible problem that could happen to their products. Also where on your car is your MSD box mounted?? Thanks Desert Dale.

if your box is mounted upside down, moisture cant escape and it ruins the unit. only 4 hours of operation wont mean anything if the unit was faulty from the start.
