Unhappy Bad gas mileage

1991 Gt 180,000 miles, 3.73 gears, Aod trans. Gas mileage is very poor aroung 13-14 mpg. What could be causing this. there seems to be fuel odor coming out of exhaust. Tried pulling codes but the adapter in the car does not seem to work I hooked up the computer but it would not communicate with my car. What can I do?
That mpg is for city and some highway driving.

HMMM, same thing happening to me. I have the same thing even though I have the factory rear end. Of course you can expect some loss of gas with those gears, but it shouldn't be that much.

Remember to look at everything. Did you do a tune-up? when is the last time that you checked your tune up parts? I have also read by several manual that it can also be a cracked or broken part of the evaporative system. Check your Evaporative canister and Fuel Vapor return line for cracking or breakage, which runs right beside the brake lines on your passenger side of your car. Check your rubber hoses that run from the charcoal canister to the vapor return line.

Hope it helps

Try scanning it with a jumper wire. The Check Engine Light will flash out the codes. Connect the wire between Signal Return and Self Test Input (see the illustration, then turn the key to "run", and it should flash out the Key On Engine Off codes, and the Continuous Memory codes. They should be 2 digit codes with a single flash between the KOEOs and CMs. Once it throws the last CM code, start the engine. It'll flash four times, then run through the testing procedure, and after a minute or so, it'll flash the Key On Engine Running codes.
I'd say fix all the faults, if any, and do a complete tuneup. Mileage should improve.
Also, if you have an exhaust leak between the engine and the O2 sensors, it'll run rich.

do you still have all of your smog pump/ EGR crap connected? If i remember correctly that is supposed to increase milage with it connected... i was getting aroung 15 mpg a while back, but then i found that the electrical connector to my EGR valve on the throttle body was disconnected... I reconnected it and since then i've been getting around 18-22 mpg...
