Hey fellow car nuts, I am planning on pulling the 302/5.0L HO from my 1990 GT, to swap it with a 5.0L GT-40 motor. I recently refinished the interior and plan to pull the motor before paint. Just asking for some advice (tricks, things i need to do) anything whats the smoothiest way to approch this. I have a friend witha shop and lift so...
Thanks Brad Gaede
I guess one trick I always said I would use if doing this again would be use a video camera liberally. Record every line, bolt, hose etc. you remove. Keep marked coffee cans or whatever to store your parts in until reassembly.
That sounds like a good idea. Does anyone else have any tips, do I need to replace the computer or do anything to the wireing? Anyhting that I need to know about the swap or tips.
Here I am with the same question as before. Just wondering if anyone has swaped a regular 5.0 H.O. motor with a GT 40 Cobra motor successfully, and would have some addvice on what needs to be different with the car, electrical, motor mounts, any advice is appreciated. Or maybe some things that I need to be aware of or carefull of.
Correct me if im wrong but I believe its the same. Just the heads and intake are different. GT 40 package is still a 302 just more hp. So it should drop in and bolt up, maybe need bigger injectors and maf.
Like I said should drop right in

Gaed whats up brother! south dakota here too man!!! well born and raised now out here, not too many bikinis back home cept for the sturgis rally lol anyway no easy way around the swap is it 2 diff motors pull and replace or? same block and only top end bein replaced ?? let us know we can hook ya up. my hometown was Huron SD and to think i havent bought a harley yet for an excuse to ride back home lol. oops neverind it is 2 diff motors just pull an replace just have a buddy or 2 to watch for a faster painless swap.
yeah like lugthug said maybe just 24 lb injectors and matching MAF So with the new project are ya gonna have some state trooper fun lmao just kidding bro lol race em to a donut shop or just slow down a bit and hold one out the window hahaha!!!!
91'lx I would like to keep the same block so.. But what is the differences with the motors, I know that the intake manifold and manifold is different. South Dakota is not so bad the winter time gives me time to work on my car, I have had the car since march ($1,500 no rust, body in great shape, under 100,000 miles, interior was in tough shape but i took care of that with new seats, carpet, redied all plastic looks new,) anyways i want to pull the motor before paint, so that i can do everything right along with the tranny. What would be the best way to go about this I have a buddy with a new shop he build behind his house with a lift, cement floors everything it nice man
Let me know if you have some pointers or ideas.
thanks man
1) If your present hood lines up correctly, drill a small hole through the hinge and into the underside of the hood to act as an alignment hole. Make putting the hood back on much easier.
2) If you remove anything, re-insert the bolts/nuts. This will keep you from losing them or forgetting where they went. Takes notes and pics for later. Use baggies and a felt tip, duct tape and a felt tip...Label, Label, Label....
3) Drain all the fluids before you pull anything. Even then you will still get anti-freeze on the floor. Have a bag of floor dry handy. Along with a box of shop rags. Remove the radiator, fan and fan shroud
4) Remove the accessories and wire tie them to the inner fenders.
5) Jack the car up and place securely on four jackstands.
6) Disconnect the exhaust, the driveshaft, clutch cable (if manual)the trans cross member (support with floor jack). Make certain to unplug any wires!!! Unbolt the motor mounts. Your gonna replace them with new ones...Right?
7) Pull the motor and tranny out as a unit, if you can. Also put it back in that way. It makes it easier to align things.
8) Take your time, work slowly...There are lots of ways to get really injured pulling a motor. Always have someone else around to keep an eye on you. Sorta hard to dial 911 when pinned under a car.
My son and I parted out a 93 LX in a little less than three hours using hand tools, an engine hoist, a floor jack, and four jackstands. I think we only used the impact wrench a couple of times. That also included stripping the interior wiring. Granted we weren't concerned about putting it back together in a week or two. But it doesn't take that long to pull a motor/tranny if you've got a couple guys helping with the jacks/hoists.
