Default Tremec T-56 6 Speed Install Info! Good Stuff

This info may be something the Moderators may want to add to their tech section!!

The t56 comes with a bellhousing and takes stock 10.5" clutch, clutch fork, cable and stud from a 5.0 with a t5. So aside from some crossmember modifications and shortening the driveshaft it is pretty much a bolt in. Here is a list of the modifications the guy who sold it to me included. Drop me an email (b_m_gillespie@hotmail.com) if you want any more info or would like the guy's email as he had probably the best deal in the states. Here is what he sent me.

"Tremec T56 transmission with a 83-93 Mustang 5.0-5.8 Bell housing. ARE YOU TIRED OF REPLACING T5'S? THIS T56 IS RATED @ 450 LB/FT OF TORQUE!!!! Tremec's Ford aftermarket replacement T56 transmission assembly comes with a new T56 compatible bellhousing that replaces the existing '83-and-later T5 bellhousing while retaining the original clutch assembly, cable clutch linkage, clutch fork, release bearing, and pivot ball stud. Installation in older mechanical linkage clutch applications requires conversion to cable clutch actuation. Advance Engineering West offers a universal cable clutch linkage conversion kit for older Mustangs. Borg-Warner developed the trans installation procedure using a '91 Mustang coupe. It requires The "Ford" T56 uses a 10 spline Ford-style input shaft that permits retention of the existing Ford clutch assembly. Its mount pad location is farther back than the T5. However, the shifter is in the same location as a T5, eliminating the need for floorpan modifications. The "stick" attaches using two mounting bolts, the same as a T5 shifter (or most other Hurst shifters). The double hump crossmember and dual -cat exhaust are typical only of '86 and later 5.0L V8 cars. Suitability of earlier single-car exhaust systems and crossmembers has not been verified, nor have the fabricated brackets been tested to see if they fit convertibles. If needed, Ford Motorsport sells a universal double-humped coup-style crossmember. The stock driveshaft must be shortened 1.5 inches and converted to use a beefy Ford "C6-style" 31 spline slip-yoke. The yoke hooks right up to the existing '90-'94 T5 driveshaft's 1350 series U-joint. Earlier Mustang T5 conversions must use a hybrid U-joint --for '87-'89, uses a 1330/1350-series; for '83 - 86, use a 1310/1350-series. Bellhousing and Clutch Linkage Tremec ships the trans and bellhousing as an assembly. Detach the bellhousing from the trans and bolt it in place of the original T5 bell housing. Unlike the conventional bellhousings and transmissions that we're used to, the fork, pivot stud, and release bearing attach to the front of the trans, not to the bellhousing itself. After transferring these items from the old bellhousing to the new trans, bolt the trans to the new bellhousing. Crossmember Modifications The T56 mount pad is located 5 inches farther to the rear than the T5's pad, so the stock crossmember The clutch-cable and fork junction is in a different location than the stock T5 unit. To clear it, trim the production engine-to-transmission rear cover plate. Mount the crossmember to the underbody using the stock rear mounting brackets as substitute front brackets, and adding new spacers and fabricated rear mounting brackets. This requires drilling new 3/8-inch bracket attaching holes in the floor and subframe. Remember to remove the front door scuff plates and push the floor carpet back before drilling the holes through the floor. Use GM trans mount PN17990869 to mate the trans to the crossmember. Bolt it to the trans using two metric M10x1.5x30 mounting bolts; the mount's single crossmember retention stud requires and M10x1.5 metric prevailing torque nut and a new slot in the crossmember"

That is nice info, but D&D use a better crossmember. It is a newer unit that strattles the frame rails and bolts in, NO WELDING! Best of all it is a factory Ford mount.

I don't recall the the Mustang T-56 handling 450 lbs of torque. I know the Viper one can thats why I used it.

I want one!!! The T-56 setup from D&D performance is supposed to be a great kit. As soon as money becomes available and the wife isn't looking-watch out.

the D&D T-56 for a 94-95, costs $2695
In Summit, they have a Richmond R.O.D 6-speed for $2,899.
My question is, are these remotely the same? with D&D its a kit with things to help modify it to work. There doesnt appear to be anything included with Summits. perhaps its an easy swap?
The richmond holds 450-torque as well.

Justnlx, If you click below, the Tremec site has the mustang replacement rated at 450 ft/lbs.

http://www.ttcautomotive.com/products/T-56.asp

And D&D have the rplacement as 440 ft/lbs and the blueprinted viper one rated at 550 ft/lbs.

http://ddperformance.com/driveline.htm

Vortex, I paid $1850 US for mine, t56 and bellhousing. The D@D kit includes things as shortened driveshaft and croosmember relocation brackets, the driveshaft is a cheap mod and the blueprints for the brackets are on one of the adove links, they cost me a bottle of Lambs Rum to get done, and D&D wants $299 for them.

That's right my mistake. Dang! first one this year

Yeah right

What I meant about D&D's crossmember was that it is a Ford part and the chance of finding it in a yard cheap is pretty good. No need to fab one up, weld one in, or buy one from D&D.

Yes D&D have it in a kit form, that's what I have, but you don't need to get the shaft from D&D (that's funny) or some of the other things. The shaft they sell is a nice one though.

Justnlx, What I had to get fabricated, was the crossmember relocation brackets to move it back as the t56 mounts 5 inches further back than the t5. They were fairly simple to make up. The crossmember is a stock ford double hump which I had already. I couldn't upload a pic of the bracket, the blueprints are on one of the above sites though.

Brian,

You can call me Tony.

I'm famliar with the bracket your talking about. I am the type that if I don't have to fab something, I won't. I also try not to weld to the chassis as much as possible.

Also, the crossmember and brackets I'm talking about I believe are the newer style on the 95 and newer Mustangs. In my case were I moved the engine back, the crossmember brackets allowed me to position anywhere along the frame rails.

So basically there are a couple of ways to mount the crossmember. Reuse the rear mounting bracket as the front and fab a new rear bracket, or find a 95 and newer crossmember and brackets in a yard

I had a slight vibration at highway speeds. D&D paid to ship it back, they went through it, and sent it back within 2 weeks. I have not had a chance to put it back in.

The time I had it in, I loved it I like the gearing in the Viper T-56 with 4:10 gears in the rear, it is great! 4:30's might be a better choice.

All in all very pleased.

I don't know where you would get just the bellhousing, maybe D@D. Most Ford speedo cables are the same I am going to try one out of an F150. The bellhousing allows the use of the 10.5" clutch behind the T5. You also need to relocate the crossmember back 5 " and all that info is in my first post. If you can get the right bellhousing it shouldn't be too much of a challenge to get it in. I am putting mine in tommorrow!

Brian is right, D&D can get you a bellhousing. The speedo cable is a truck cable. I will see if I still have the part number.

The clutch disc will have to be a Chevy unit the input shaft has a different number of splines. I forget how many, sorry. The Mustang pressure plate, throw-out bearing and fork are all used.
