Default some cam swap questions

alright i am looking to put a bigger cam in my motor. it has stock heads, and intake. so i want the biggest cam i can get that will still work with the stock heads and intake. i was looking at the e303. is that a good cam or is there better? and when doing the cam swap will there be enough room to pull the cam out of the motor without pulling the motor. i know i would have to pull the radiator out. and what else should i replace while i have some of the motor torn apart? like timing chain and gear? Hydraulic roller valve tappets?

I just did a cam swap, from a F303 to the E303. You dont have to pull the motor. Take off the front bracketry for you accessories, you will also have to pull the ac cooler thats behind the radiator as well as the radiator. I suggest you also replace the valve lifters. Some guys say you can reuse them if they look ok, cause there rollers, but they have plungers in em that once fill with oil, are nearly impossible to get all the way down. And if you dont, youll just end up with misadjusted rockers and lifter chattering. I just went through all this, and trust me, it sucks havin to tear everything back apart again just to change the lifters. Summit has a nice set from ford racing for 120 bucks. You dont need to remove the waterpump from the timing plate cover, you can just take it off as one piece. Not a bad idea to change the timing chain and gears while you in there, but if theres not any slack and it looks ok, it should be fine.

Don't do it. you'll end up hating the cam after u realize all your low end is gone and the car ends up slower.

If you really want to do something with the valvtrain, go with 1.7 rockers. you'll be happier.

Save the cam until you have heads and an intake to go along with it. I'd seriously reconsider the alphabet cams too.

A cam swap is not a good starting point, as the real limitation is the stock heads. You will never get the increased power you're after with any cam, with stock heads. A better (but more expensive) starting point would be a good set of aftermarket heads. You will see a noticeable increase in power even with the stock cam, if you go with good flowing heads. I've always heard that the factory cam isn't all that bad, it's the heads that suck.

ya i would do heads first, but i am doing this for a school project and i dont have the extra money to get a nice set of heads. so what is the best cam i could get and not loose my low end? would the f303 be a bad cam to get?

You seem hell bent on a cam, I'll give you another no vote.. Remember a engine is just an airpump. If you can't get air in (TB,Intake, heads,CAI,MAF, etc) a cam bigger cam can't allow air in that isn't there. Ditto on getting air out of the motor (headers, xpipe, catback). Not sure what mods you have, but a set of gears is your best bang for the buck as far as quicker et's. If you live in a state w/o emissions like me a xpipe w/o cats with give you a decent hp increase and loose some wieght. You can pick up a Trick Flow intake for about 400 bucks which you really need along with at least a 70MM throttle body. A good free-flowing exhuast system is mandatory. You simply won't make any kind of real power trying when your motor is being choked by a stock exhaust.
