i have a couple questions actually. first off i just finished building my engine w/ afew new mods. the initial start up was not easy. i turned the key on and had no powerto the starter solenoid. so of course i jumped from battery to the solenoid and it turned over. the key does shut it off though. do i have a bad ignition switch? next i have the timing set to 12 degrees advanced but my headers are getting cherry red hot and i have some back firing throught the exhaust. i just put a 280h cam in it from comp and a set of windsor heads. i'm thinking i'm running to lean. the problem is i know nothing about carbs. so i'm not sure how to adjust that. any info. will keep me from pulling my hair out.

With the motor cool, open up your sight plugs and determine your float level. You want the float set so that the fuel level is even with the bottom of the sight plug hole. Then, tighten your mixture adjustment screws till they bottom out. Then loosen them 1.5 turns - maybe a little more. This should get you in the ballpark.
Is your fuel pump good?
Is the gas in the car old?

RE the ignition switch, it might be because of your clutch safety switch.
Also, you can remove the fuel line from the carb, (I'd attach a long length of rubber fuel line to it, to get it away from the car and even out of the garage) and crank the motor. Check for steady flow. Maybe the fuel just hasn't filled the fuel line all the way, yet.

i checked the fuel pump flow and i have plenty of fuel to the carb. my carb does not have sight plugs on it. could i hook a vacuum gauge up to the full manifold vacuum port and start w/ the idle mixture screws all the way in and adjust them a 1/4 turn until i get the highest vacuum reading? is 12 degrees advanced ok for timing? i also noticed when i advance the timing to 18 degrees it stops back firing through the exhaust.

Yep, gauging vacuum is the best way to tune the mixture. But you definitely want your ignition dialed in first. If you're using an old balancer, the timing marks might be out of whack. Did you change the pointer?

You might wanna verify TDC on #1 against what the balancer and pointer say - just to be sure.
Otherwise, just set the timing to where it'll run the best, and then tweak the carb. You may have to go back and forth between the two, making adjustments.
