Question Correct powersteering fluid

I've been using type f transmission fluid in my power steering unit.I am installing a new trw rack I was told by a mechanic i should use powersteering fluid specifically cd1 or a clear type fluid. He says tranny fluid eats the hoses. What is the difference between the two fluids & which one is best for my '89 stang ?

Check your owners manual for correct type of fluid , but if you have been using type f I would stick to it. Adding ps fluid to a system that is supposed to be type F can cuase some problems with seals and even eventualy ruin the whole system. Best bet if you don't want to take a chance is call a qualified dealer and ask them what is supposed to be in there . But I would use type F.

Our cars are supposed to take type f tranny fluid from factory. The different rack I do not think would change this as I think it is mainly the pump that requires the type f fluid. This is just a guess though and I could be way off, maybe someone that has changed the rack before will chime in soon???

From my understanding they are not compatable with each other and will seperate in the System, stick with Type F for a Long trouble free life of your pump and rack!

type F fluid works, the shop manual calls for Mercon fluid, but you could put in MerconV too. im pretty sure that you can mix all three, but i know for a fact you can mix mercon and merconV. i would stick with Mercon or MerconV since they are the most readily available.

The Owners Manual and the Ford Service Manual Call for ONLY Type F Fluid, I believe anything Ford prior to 96 Calls for Type F and again from my understanding it does not mix with other fluids but seperates.

Ya my ford service manual and Haynes manual both call for type F only.

I've read that the PS fluid makes the system noisier too.

at work we have Ford powersteering fluid, and its in the same shape and color bottle that the type F comes in. it says on the back that its for use with vehicles that take type F fluid, so i believe that its just mercon. there is also a TSB out that states Mercon is being replaced with MerconV as a service fluid. any of these three will work, its up to your preference, but keep it all the same.
