Default Durability of 23 tooth speedo gear

I need to get a 23 tooth speedo gear for my 94 GT, w/ 3.73's, but have heard that the 23 tooth speedo gears wear down really quick. Anyone have any expirience w/ this? Thanks, Rick

Sometimes they do sometimes they don't.

Do you want to take a chance of pieces of that gear circulating inside your transmission?

I have dealt with this many times. I had my tranny out twice within a week and went through two of these(23 tooth). They were still working but most of the teeth were gone.

I decided just to go with the (21) and deal with the speedometer being off, but this is also annoying so I'm thinking of putting the chewed up (23) back in so atleast I know how fast I'm going.

I think the problem is the larger diameter with the extra teeth. I've used them in the past and have one right now with no problems. I put the end in a drill and use some sandpaper on a sanding block and while its spinning, reduce the diameter 0.020" to 0.030". Then remove any burs with an exacto knife. I had one for over 20,000 miles before I sold the car a few years ago.

I dont remember if my gear was a 21 tooth or a 23 tooth, I just remember it was White in color and has not given me a problem since I did my 3.55 Gears more than 6 years ago.

The DRIVE gear is on transmission's output shaft. (The gear is plastic and removable in manual transmissions. It is machined into the output shaft in autos.) The DRIVEN gear is on the transmission end of the speedometer cable.

Ford drive gears: 6T, 7T, 8T
Ford driven gears: 16T through 21T (two of each, one for manuals and one for autos)

Ford does not make a speedometer driven gear with more than 21 teeth.

The speedo gear is on the driver's side of the tranny. If I remember right there is one bolt holding it in. Remove the bolt and slide out the gear. Unclip the speedo gear, slide it off.

Default Go To Dallasmustangs.com

Dallasmustangs.com has a programable speedo calibrator that accounts for tire size and gear ratio, With this, you can have any combo and have the right speedometer readings, also, its re-programable, its $99. Hopefully it works out!
