Spraying some lube on the belt was not a bad idea, but it really didn't eliminate the source of the sound. If you remove the belt completely you are temporarily deactivating all the accessories, which will mean that if the sound persists its INTERNAL (rather than external).
This breaks the problem down into 2 manageable portions.
Assuming its INTERNAL, you probably have a problem related to the work you did with the heads - I would suggest you didn't get the timing bits back together properly, which can cause a lot of noise. Bad news - if this is it, you'll be diving back into that motor.
GOOD NEWS would be that the noise goes away when you pull off the belt, at which point you can start checking the various components.
If the water pump is bad (not too surprising considering the head gasket problems), it will make a tremendous racket.
