Default Please Help 5.0 Im out Of Ideas??

i have a 91 mustang gt, with a votech supercharger and alot of upgrades well i recently blew my head gasket, well i just finished puting the car back together today, well i pushed it out of my garage to start it and it started, but there is a problem and i have no idea what it could be.... the problem is when the car is running it there is this really loud sound that goes with the engine like if the motor is goin "up down up down up down" that is what the noise does it sort of sounds like a bad belt but REALLY loud.... and it sounds like its comin from around where the charger sits... but i have never had this problem and i can not seem to figure out what it is?? any ideas please help, if the timing was of could that do it or could it be somethin with the internals?? thanks any answers would be great

Default Belted

It could be that the belt is rubbing somewhere - or even mis-routed.

Did you take pics of your motor before you pulled the heads?

You might have a pulley out of wack too.

One way to eliminate the issue is to remove the belt and see if the sound goes away. If it does, you know it is a problem related with one of the following:

1. Belt

2. Pulleys

3. Supercharger (hope not)

4. One of the other accessories, like water pump, alternator, ac compressor, power steering, etc.

5. Crankshaft (hope not on this one too)

How did the gasket go out - did the motor get really hot?

The Pullys seem alright i have assembled and reassembled the motor so many times, but this noise is sooooo loud and i can not figure out what it is i tried sprayin the pullies while the car is on to see if maybe they were dirty and it didnt get quiet but i was also thinking could timing make the car do that? or what about if the rocker arms are too tight??? and the only thing that happened when the head gasket went was i saw alot of smoke and the temp guage spiked and then went back down then jumped again and went down, i turned the car off before it could get hot and when i pulled the heads and everything i didnt see anything out of the ordinary... but when i started it yesterday there was no smoke comin out so it seems like everything is fixed i just need to tweak somethin but im not sure what it is??? any more ideas, i was gonna take a video of it and post it so you can see i might do that tomorrow its too late now (the neighbors get mad when i start it up late at night lol) get back to me thanks!

Default Belted

Spraying some lube on the belt was not a bad idea, but it really didn't eliminate the source of the sound. If you remove the belt completely you are temporarily deactivating all the accessories, which will mean that if the sound persists its INTERNAL (rather than external).

This breaks the problem down into 2 manageable portions.

Assuming its INTERNAL, you probably have a problem related to the work you did with the heads - I would suggest you didn't get the timing bits back together properly, which can cause a lot of noise. Bad news - if this is it, you'll be diving back into that motor.

GOOD NEWS would be that the noise goes away when you pull off the belt, at which point you can start checking the various components.

If the water pump is bad (not too surprising considering the head gasket problems), it will make a tremendous racket.

Sure. Running it for 60 seconds without the belt won't hurt anything, and will eliminate the motor and its internal "bits" (parts if you prefer), including those all important timing gears and so forth.

Motor will probably be unhappy without its usual load and sc, but the point is just to listen for that annoying sound.
