My mustangs scarin me today, took a quick trip down to lowes and back, about 8 miles all and all. Park when I get home, and I notice a little bit of steam/smoke or something coming from under the hood on the passenger side. Pop the hood and I've got what I assume to be smoke coming from my passenger side of my engine, seems to possibly be where the exhaust manifold bolts to the engine, comes from the very back of the engine. Any ideas? Its an 84 5.0 with a 4barrel. About 70k miles or so. All stock.
I changed the oil a little more than 3k ago (on to-do list) and I think my thermostat is stuck open. The thermo is something I decided has been like that for the past few months though. I had thought when I put this car back on the road after 7 years of sitting, that the gauge just wasnt reading, now ive noticed it does show it warms up, but only after a long while. So Im convinced the thermos just stuck open. I bought a new one and its on the to-do list too, but its just so damn cold outside right now and I have nowhere to work inside.
Any ideas on the smoke or what I need to look for/at for more clues?
If it smells like burning oil, check for an oil leak that may be dripping onto the header, most likely would be coming out of the valve cover. With the car sitting for 7 years, there is a good chance of a bad gasket or 2 that got dried up from sitting.

Check your waterpump, my car steamed like crazy when mine went out. My engine bay actaully has a almost burnt look from it.

Hopefully just a heater hose. What'd it smell like?

Cant really say it had a specific smell, so freakin cold outside was hard to tell. Looked about like ciggarette smoke though but not as dense, seemed to come from the very back top corner of my header. Cars been running fine lately other than being hard to start, but thats normal when its like 5 degrees outside.
