I know that the 8.8 started getting used in 86, but not sure if that is the case with the 4 cyl too... best bet would prolly be to open it up and take a look at the ring gear. Might be able to tell the size based on your gear ratio. (# of teeth on ring gear divided by number of teeth on pinion) You would have to compare the size of yours to available options in both the 8.8 and 7.5. Any ford dealership should be able to give you those specs. That's the only way I can think of to tell them apart. I'm not sure of the differences in the two rearends other than the size of the ring gears. The 7.5 is obviously smaller but I'm not sure of what visual differences there are between them.... Sorry
