Default 1985 G.T. convertible need help installing a new top.

I have 1985 G.T. convertible. I have already purchased a brand new top complete with glass back window, top pads, and new cables. I am an excellent mechanic, however I have never done much upholstery. I was quoted a price of $450 for labor only. I would like to do it myself and use the money towards a new paint job, but I don't want to get in over my head and potentially have to buy another new top. Any help or a link to a place for help would greatly be appreciated.

Hi, fellow Georgian.

From what I've heard over the years, installing a new convertible top is a bear. I've never done it, and I have a convertible so I've looked into the matter. I am a do-it-yourself type, but the prospect of the job is intimidating to me.

I seem to recall a step-by-step for the job somewhere on the web - I'll see if I can find it.

One thing was certain - you need a good heated weathertight garage to work in, and you need to get the top warm and supple before attempting to stretch it on.

The cautionary note about "avoid stressing the top which is easily snagged or torn" was about where I stopped reading.
