its actually a starter solenoid switch. the solenoid is on the side of the starter. (thank you rctc auto mechanics class!)
its uspposedly a common part to go out. its relatively easy to change as well. one can do it in just a few minutes. just make sure you put all the connections back where they are supposed to be.
its a simple procedure to change it. grab a new one from your local auto parts store, and then move all the stuff off the old on onto the new one. make sure you dont over tighten the bolts on the copper studs. i broke a stud that way and had to go back and get a new one.
If it's giving you trouble, go ahead and replace it. This is something you shouldn't scrimp on since it determines if your car starts or not and it will always choose the absolute wrong time to leave you stranded.

The name is starter motor relay, and it should be around $20-$25. You can get it at your local dealership, order it from someone like 5.0 Resto or Year One, or even Auto Zone or Advance, although I'd go to the dealership. Be quicker than ordering it.
