I use 75-140 from amsoil and it already has a friction modifier in it, but if your going to use standard lube you need to pick some up. Ford sales some motorcraft in a small bottle for around 5 bucks or so. I think it holds right around 4 qts its been a while since I changed mine somthing I need to before the spring

It only holds 2 qts and a bottle of friction modifier. You fill it up to within about 1/4-3/8" of the fill hole. I think it calls for 85W-90.

There is a plug on the driveshaft side of the 8.8 on the drivers side about driveshaft level you fill it up through the fill hole until it runs out of the front plug hole but yeah its about 2 quarts and 4 oz. of friction modifier .

75W-90 is what is called for with a Bottle of Friction Modifier.

The 75W140 spec is usually used for synthetics as it's flow characteristics are so much better than non-syn.

I also read somewhere that filling to overflow is incorrect. The amount should be measured and no more than that should be used.

It does not matter if you are running Synthetic or not as the weight of the oil does NOT change! That is like saying you are going to run straight 50 Weight Synthetic in your engine insyead of 10W-30.

That makes no sense to me. The numbers having nothing to due with 'weight.' All the W means is WINTER ingredients.

Stnthetic lubricants resist heat and cold better and they usually have a broader range of operating temps.

It is documented that synthetics fluids will result in less friction and thus less heat and more horsepower.

Yes W is Winter, but you are putting a Different Viscosity Oil than what is Recommended. Viscosity is the Resistance to flow, it does not matter if you are using Synthetic or Dino!

putting my 3.73s in next weekend(having it done-I supply parts/fluids)- so BACK TO THE QUESTION,2 qts 75-90,or 85-90 and a bottle of friction modifier or amsoil, right? and which is better and why?--not gonna tell you what he told me to get,I just wanna see what's the better thing to do(1 of the 3 IS what he said to get)

75-90/friction modifier--how much each
85-90/friction modifier--how much each
75-140 amsoil--how much

The Ford Racing instructions say 85W-90 to within 1/4-9/16" from the fill hole (2 qts. exactly for me) and a 4 oz. bottle of Motorcraft friction modifier. I just did what the instructions said. I thought I read or heard somewhere that the first number is the oils viscosity at 100 degrees and the second number is the viscosity at 212 degrees, or so I remember.

There is no such Grade as 85W-90 that I am aware of. Ford calls for 75W-90 in the Service Manual along with a bottle of Friction Modifyer which you can purchase for a few bucks at the Dealer.

Thr guy installing my gears is a Tech at the local Ford dealer. They don't install "preformance" parts, this guy has access to a shop and equipment and does it on the side--He says 2 qts 75-90 and a bottle of friction modifier.

I am pretty sure the Friction Modifier comes in a 4 oz Bottle.

Untrue...

The numbers do not have a thing to do with the thickness of the lubricant but everything to do with it's resistence to flow at a given temperature.

The 75W140 just has broader operating temperatoure than 75W90.
