Question 1990 mustang wont shift into any gear but 4th

We have a 1990 mustang 5.0 that is having a shifting problem. It will only shift into 4th gear, it seems like it is shifting into the others but never actually engages when you are in the gear. we pulled the shift off and it looked like the fuel that was suppose to be in there was almost completely dry, could this be causing the problem or are we looking at the forks being bad...... any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a broken output shaft i dont think low fluid would have anything to do with that, did you launch the car real hard?

i think that u messed up the 1 and 2 gears, like u shreaded them and the pieces of metal are starting to take everything else with it, i work at a transmission shop and i rebuild transmissions. dont take it in to a tranny shop and get it rebuilt it would be cheaper just to get a new T5 from summit or get a rebuilt tranny from a magazine with a warranty. thats wat i would do if i was in ur situation.

I'll agree.

Sounds like your tranny is just done. Sucks, right?

How many miles are on it? What about upgrades to your car? How do you drive it? That's what you have to look at. True that it might be a broken output shaft, but if 4th is all you have, wouldn't you be unable to shift into 4th as well? Just food for thought.

Sorry to hear that, but... I always look at broken parts in my car as a good thing.

It's always a time to upgrade!
