Default 1986 Mustang Front Wheel Bearing Replacement?

The front wheel bearings on my 1986 Mustang GT need to be replaced. I've never done this before and just wanted to see if any special tools are required?

I've replaced the rotors and pads on cars before, is it as simple as that, remove the rotor, slide on the new bearings and put it back together?

Thanks in advance,
Sam

Default Torque

Yep, that's pretty much it. Be sure to examine the spindle for wear - if the bearings tried to weld themselves to the other parts around them, you might need more than just new bearings.

I don't remember the exact torque settings (get you a Haynes manual for your car - they list these). I know that there are at least a dozen ways to estimate how tight these need to be, but I'm a big believer in getting that castleated nut back on correctly.

Use the right amount of grease and work it into the bearings with your fingers and palm. You don't really need to dump a bunch of extra grease into the grease cap, though many swear by this.

Be sure to put all the original hardware back on, including all washers and the all-important cotter pin (replace it if its broken or worn out).

I'm serious about wear on that spindle. If the bearings failed and dug up some spurs from that spindle, its toast.

you will need to replace your bearing races, those need to be beat out and in of the rotors, also making shure the races are fully seated, if you never done this before you may want to get some help from someone who has. big G

I just did this on my 86. Its easy. Just pack the bearings, don't be shy with the grease, torque the nut to 15-20 ft/lbs while spinning the rotor forward, then back off 1/2 turn and retorque to 10-15 in/lbs
