Default 90 5.0 GT oil pump & oil pump drive shaft?

90 5.0 GT oil pump & oil pump drive shaft install questions. I got a new hardened FMS oil pump drive shaft and I am having a little trouble. What is the little keeper thing on the end of the shaft and how important is it. I ended up breaking two of them and finally when I got the 3rd one it didn't seem as tight as the orginal one that came with the car. I seems to be tight and the oil pump drive shaft doesn't move with the pump installed, but if it does move what would happen? Without the keeper on the oil pump drive shaft will slid up and down into the distributor and back into the oil pump but does not come out. So, if this keeper slides down and the shaft is allowed to move what's gonna happen, if anything? And to answer the question, yes I removed the oil pan with the engine in the car and tranny still bolted up, remove the steering rack, jacked the engine up as far as it would go, dropped pick up tube and oil pump and it came right out.
Thanks for the help.

That keeper is to keep the d/s from lifting out of the pump so far that it falls back down into the oil pan if you take the distributor out.
I learned that the hard way.
The d/s will come up along with the distibutor till the keeper hits aginst the place wher the distributor seats that has the hole just big enough for the very bottom of it to go through--adjust the keeper high enough to make it hit there before the shaft comes out of the pump
