Default nitrous effects on engine

what type of engine damage can occur if you do not back off your timing? i recently installed a wet nitrous kit on my 1990 mustang and now i have a knocking in the engine( car does not smoke and doesnt seem to have lost any power) car doesnt burn oil and car doesnt leak the knocking only occurs when i get up around 2500-3000 rpms and if you put the car in neutral and rev the engine the car doesnt knock.....any suggestions??? could it be a timing issue or burnt piston??thanks for any info in advance(also i know now that i should have back off on the timing 2 degrees for every 50hp but didnt know then....the guy that installed the nitrous has been running nitrous for over 8 years on cars i would have thought that he would have advised me that)

first thing first. pull of all the plugs and check and see if any are black.
after that id do compression check.

Id prob run a range or so colder plug then stock as well as get a air fuel gauge and watch if its leaning out.
