He doesn't "NEED" custom bolts. A stronger option is to have the block drilled, and tapped to accept the 1/2" bolts (this is a lot stronger). Also if he doesn't want to go that route, there are steel sleeves that fit in the head bolt holes the reduce the size to 7/16".

Yes. You can also put Cleavland heads on both the 302(called a BOSS) and 351W(called a Cleavor) with some minor mods. I personaly building a Cleavor myself.

There are the same head. The only diff. is the 351W has has bean drilled for a larger head bolt. Other that that they are identical

Let me know, a buddy of mine said he is getting 351 heads put on his 302 but has to have custom bolts made to accept it.
On older 302's You had to change pistons, head bolts and pushrods.
1. Change pistons-To keep the compression up.
2. Head bolts-302=7/16" 351W=1/2" Alternatives-1/2' to 7/16" sleeves, re-drill & tap block or buy special bolts.
3. Pushrods-In between size needed. Alternative-Use a length checker and get custom pushrods made.
4. Good time to replace the valves in the 351W heads w/1.94 & 1.60's
All of the parts to do the swap use to be available from Ford dealers.
I'm not sure about 5.0 302's. They may require fewer changes.
Just slap the 351 heads on and go. The pushrods will fit just fine, no need for custom and that goes the same for the headers. Its a direct bolt on except for the sleaves you have to put in to make the bolt fit
