Default Rebuilt rear end, now VERY tight

Rebuilt the rear end over the weekend, new pinion gears, all new bearings, clutch pack, etc. Everything is within spec., pinion tightened to 20 inch pounds rotating, pinion depth fine, backlash at .008". The carrier turns rather hard before we tighten the bearing caps, actually need to insert an axle to rotate the carrier. When we torque down the bearing caps, it is so stiff we need to use a crowbar across the lug studs to turn the axles to rotate the carrier. We have it all together now and we cannot rotate the tires by hand (trans in nuetral). The engine turns it over, but we are wondering if it is natural for the rear end to be this stiff until it has a few miles on it. We have not driven it yet, waiting for some advice. Thank You

Even a brand new rear end should turn easily by hand. I would double check all of you measurements. If the pinion has the proper rotating torque I would say that you have way too much side bearing preload. Either your side shims are too thick or your bearings aren't pressed onto the carrier all the way.

The rearend should be easily turned by hand. If you force it especially by trying to drive it you could trash your bearings in a heartbeat. I would check everything over again and make sure the bearings aren't cocked and are pressed on all the way. Also make sure there are no burrs or nicks you could have created when pulling things apart. Check if your shims are too thick or moved on you.
