Default 1991 5.0 knocking after transmission swap

I replaced my t-5 with a rebuilt unit along with throw out bearing and clutch. I did not resurface the flywheel. When idling there is a knocking sound that goes away when I push in the clutch. Is this a sign that the flywheel needs resurfaced/replaced? Thanks for any advice.

You should always resurface the flywheel or get a new one. Sounds like that may be the problem. I wouldnt say knocking is indicative of a non-resurfaced flywheel, but it should be done anyway, then you can inspect the clutch to make sure everything's good.

I did not replace the clutch fork, is it possible to get overly worn? I'm planning on tearing the transmission back out within the next month and hoping to have a resolution. Thanks for the suggestions.

at my shop we put a clutch in a truck without replacing the clutch fork and when we fired it up it made a noise similar to what you seem to be desribing. i'd try replacing the fork, shouldn't cost much

Could be your Throw Out Bearing(TOB) moving side to side on your input shaft. Is it a new TOB or even if new is it a plastic retainer style unit. I have had problems when installing the plastic TOB and have warned customers before install. The other thing that happens is not enough tension on the fork and it is vibrating off the back of the bell housing.

I replaced the TO bearing, it was pre lubed out of the box from www.50resto.com. It seems like everything is working fine, I just don't like the sound. I'll see if the clutch fork is overly loose.

Same thing here, noticed the other day knock noise from underneath. I just climbed underneath today and found the clutch fork hitting bell housing. Went ahead and adjusted it out, also got the new King Kobra clutch in hand, we know whats going to be going on in my garage tonight.
