Question 1991 Mustang GT taillight lens cover removal

Anybody out there know how to remove the taillight lens covers on a 91 GT? Once they are off do they snap back on or are they glued on somehow?

I'm going to paint the car soon and the lens covers would be a lot easier to paint if they were off the taillight.

Since we're on the subject....how about removing the trim and the 5.0/Ford emblems? Can they be stuck back on or does one have to buy new ones? Would you leave the trim on and paint the trim on the car or is it better to remove the trim?

Thanks!

Rear len's on a GT or LX seperate quite easily, just use a little bit of heat from a heat gun, grab an edge and pull to you VERY carefully. It is held together with clip and buytl sealer. It comes in a roll about 1/4 inch thick. To reinstall the lens, make sure all of the clips are in the right spots and roll out some sealer to the right lenght and adhere it to the inner lens housing. Then again, VERY carefully push on the new or old lens into position.

If you are going to repaint the car however, may I suggest taking the entire taillamp assemble out so it would be easier to paint and less taping. Same thing goes with the emblems, remove them (first record where they came off of) and apply some 3M emblem tape on the back side. Make sure to remove the original tape first.

When painting a car it is best to remove as much trim and cladding as possible, cause you don't know what's hiding under there. See you have a GT. Mind you, your from Texas so I don't think the rusties are a problem in your area.
Good luck

Frank, thanks for the info.

I also have an LX and I know what you're talking about with the lens separating from the taillight assembly. But on my GT there is also a lens cover that is painted the same color as the car. Will that lens cover come off? I want to paint that cover when it is separated from the lens/assembly. I've attached a picture of a GT lens with that "slotted" cover over it.

I'll take your advice and remove the entire assembly before painting the body of the car.

Thanks for the tip with the 3M tape....was wondering what to use.

Here is a picture of the plain LX lens that I assume is under the GT cover and is what I think Frank was talking about pulling off with the help of a heat gun.

Does anyone know how to remove just the cover on a GT lens or is the cover permanently affixed to the lens of a GT?

I have to say that is not a cover.I had to buy one of the GT lenses for a car I ran into. The cover is different on the GT than the LX it is not two seperate pieces. They are two totally different taillight covers. The housings are the same though.

That means when I want to paint it, I'll have to tape up all those damn holes!!!!!?????

How did the factory paint them? Surely they didn't tape up all those holes. It's gotta come apart somehow.

Sorry buddy, the lens are interchangable that's why alot of people switch to the LX lens. I have a GT and needed a right rear lens when I bought it. My local dealer located one for me. My car is grey in color and there was'nt any promises that I would get a grey one. Alot of the stock is gone. I could of been stuck with a yellow or white one, but I too am looking at painting my car a different color.

So yes, either carefully mask off all of those dam slots or buy LX lenses.
Im sure the factory has a special machine at the time to paint the lenses.

Oops, for got to comment on the pictures. The GT picture shows a complete taillamp with housing, the LX is just the lens. You can seperate the GT and put on the LX. But there is not a LX lens under that GT taillamp housing.

DO NOT REMOVE THE DOOR MOLDING unless you have new ones, they do not come off easy and 99% of the time can not be reused. as for the 5.0 emblem, they cost about $10 each....the Ford emblems are less than $20....

sorry to bump an old thread, but whats are your opinions on GT taillights on an LX? I found some for $40 and I'm wondering if I should go with it...

For future reference, I recently repainted one of my GT taillights. Took me 15 minutes to tape up the lens, I used painters tape and a raoer blade to cut it. Tape fit perfectly, no overlapping pieces needed.
