Default 8.8 or 7.5 rear end

i'm sure that this question has been asked a million times but,
how can you tell the difference between 8.8 and 7.5 rear ends?

i own an 88 gt and the rear end has been swapped.
i can't tell which size it is.
thanks for the help fellows

Hi,
The number on the diff cover begins with "75", instead of "88", I think. Also, an 8.8's cover looks like a square with rounded corners, while the 7.5 is a stretched oval with the top and bottom straight and the sides curved.

you can have respectable times with that 7.5" rear but if you plan on a beast i would get an 87-88 tbird turbo coupe rear, its 8.8" trak lok with 3.08 or 3.73 gear depending on what tranny was in the tbird. good luck

Just before the light turned green the little ******* pointed to the NOS sicker on his machine and left a plasic patch that lasted about 100ft. I didn't stand a chance, I was smoked. He rasied his fist in victory and when home for milk and cookies, I just went to the track.

The TC rear axles from 87-88 are either 3.55 or 3.73 from the factory.
The autos were 3.73, manual was 3.55.

A 7.5 will handle up to about 400hp before it will give out. If your worried about having the 7.5

i've never heard of a 7.5 that can take the torq from a 400 hp motor. my brother broke his 7.5 on the stock 83 175 hp motor 15 years ago when the rearend was new. are they making beefier gears now for the 7.5?

Yup! I have a 7.5 and it handle 300hp fine. As long as you run a tire that is not sticky (like a drag tire)and will break loss under heavy touque. I've heard of 450hp if you realy brace the diff. housing and run aftermarket gears. I'm not sure why you would want to spend time even tying to. Less mass to spin I guess. 8.8 are so cheap.
