I have a 92 LX with stock 2.73 gears and I am looking at upgrading to a lower gear. I was thinking of going with 3.73's but am a little worried about mileage and rpm's. I currently have a wc T-5 out of a 93 cobra and in 5th gear running 60 mph I am only around 1500 rpm. Anyone have an estimate at what a mustang will top out at in 5th with 3.73's

Dude

Go to this website. scan down and you will run in to all kinds fo formulas. there is one if you know tire size, rpm, and rear gears you can figure speed. You can change any of these numbers to see what will happen to the others.

This is a great site with all kinds of info

Default Gears

I have a 93 LX that I had put 3.55 into first and that seemed fine...... for awhile. Then i went with 4.10 and that felt great except at the track with the stock cam. Too much gear for the stock cam and would need to shift to 5th which you dont do. Now with the 4.10's i still got 20-24mpg on the highway even with a weeks worth of fishing and camping equip along with food and beer in the back.
I recently put the 3.55's back in and now my car feels slower on take off of course but now I stay within my power band at the track.
With the 3.55's and a stock intake and MAS and T.B. and cam I was able to get 13.701 with 8" slicks.
With the 4.10's i would run way past the power band and actually run slower.
I never had 3.73's but with my 3.55 I was constanty beating similar cars that had the 3.73's.
As far as mpg goes,it is all in your foot i have found. A couple of MPG's isnt that much.

(note)*
That was with nothing more than pulleys, headers, rear control arms(mega-bite jr's lower only), stock cam and heads and intake.
Now i have alot more mods and havent been back to the track yet.

Red face 373 or 355

Yeah my 92 has 373 gears. Uh, for a daily driver that is pretty much stock I would stick with 355 gears because you dont need a 2500-3000rpm pull on your driver. My 92 is ok because several other mods are on there. ex edelbrock intake, e303 cam, 70mm throttle you know that old chesnut.

Just to throw some fuel on the fire.

I have run stock 2.73's, 3.55's, 3.73's, and 4.10's over my cars 15 1/2 years of life...

The 3.55's for the basically stock engine/mild bolt ons are perfect.
The 3.73's for a H/C/I with Bolt-ons and a stock t-5 is pretty good.

My PERSONAL favorite combination was my old gt-40 combo with iron heads, ecam etc...a Z-Code t-5 and 4.10's. For the street, the 2.95 first gear was actually less first gear than the stock 3.35 box and 3.73's. The .62 overdrive with 4.10's was @= to the 3.73 with the stock .68 overdrive. So what I got was less first gear, equal 5th, but 2nd, 3rd and 4th were much stronger. If I ever go back to motor or if I am forunate enough to build another coupe one day, I will replicate that combo. It was a hoot to drive on the street and still would cut low 1.6's on slicks at the track...

as always JMHO

I run 3.73 gears on my 85 5.0 with edelbrock hi rise, jl headers, dual exhaust, and under pulleys and i run 75 mph @ 2000 rpm or just around there, i still havent hit 3000 rpm yet but it feels like im doin 90-95 before i get to it so far i like 3.73 and if i slam it in 1-3 it takes off out of the 3000 rpm range

i had 3.55's in my 1995 5.0 but it just wasnt enough for me. with the 3.55's the fastest i got it was 140mph ( yeh its scary) but it took a while to get to that speed. I swapped them out for 3.73's and i was really impressed and still am happy with them today. top speed with 3.73's so far is 135mph!!!!!!!!!! and it got ther a lot quicker than with the 3.55's.

'95 5.0 GT, underdrive pulleys, hypertech chip, cold-air intake, PPP throttle body, headers, shaved heads, MSD ignition, mac muffler with offroad X-pipe, and 3.73 gears.

Well lets say mpg is the name of the game, what is the best ratio? With a stock 95 GT 5.0 5spd? This car sees most of its life on the highway, I want to bring the revs down and start saving on gas. When I get another car I will swap out the gears and enjoy the power, but for now its hard to pass off the purchase as good if I am always at the pump. I have no idea what is in there now, what ever is stock I would imagine. I dont know if I can even getting any higher gears

By the way I am getting about 23-24 right now running around 70-75 and that puts me a smigon over 2100k revs. Anyone got any other ideas on mpg? I used to own one of the modulars (96) and that thing sipped the gas at 29 mpg (ripping across nevada, 95 mph, with AC on! No joke)

I have a 95 gt 5 speed. What gears would work best, i do a little highway driving. will 3.73's kill my top end. with stock 2.73's my RPM is about 2000 @ 125 Kmph. My car is basically stock.

Default Gears

you need to look at a few things when deciding what gear. daily drivers may want to go with a lower gear to save gas, something for the weekends and the strip you can go ahead with 3.73 or 4.10. i am not sure if the 5.0's have a govener, my car was a 2.3. it now has a 460 squeezed in, so i havent had to worry about a govener. if the 5.0's cut out at a certain speed then make sure that your speedo it right, if not then the car thinks it is doing 115 and your only doing 100. you can afford to go with a little lower gear if the motor makes alot of torque also you get a higher top speed.

I have a 86' and I just last week put 3.73 gears in and believe it or not I get 19.2 mpg. I also changed my pulleys and took the 4 cat sys out. Keep in mind I did go to the the track (which is a 1/8 my fav) on the same tank full.
