Hey guys, So my 85 5.0 has a built C4 auto and I'm contimplating 3.55's and 3.73's. It's not going to be a daily driver or much of an interstate driver but I am concerned about topping out since I don't have an OD gear. Any advice?

3.55 is very popular for c4 daily drivers..

In my 89 vert, AOD it has 410 posi with 245/50/16 rear tires I get average 17-20 mpg as a daily driver on a 35 mile round trip everyday to work. At 60-65 I show about 2200-2300 rpms. Which is about the same mpg that I get in my stock 91 GT vert.
cant go but 120mph??? i had a 95 cobra with 3.73 afr 165cc trickflow track heat 24 pound injectors.. ect ect... it ran 160... with the right speedo gear...
Is my bone stock 86 GT 5 speed most likely equipped with 273 gears? That would really explain alot. Particularly why my Ford Falcon 289, 5 speed with 355's can blow it's doors off. Both cars are very healthy and running perfectly. If they are 273's they have to get to 355 soon.
373s by far...gas mileage doesnt change much it deffinately ha enough power to continue after 4000rpm. 410 would be too much especially as a daily driver 355 wouldnt be bad but for the smallest lose of gas mileage for the extra jump and aggresiveness 373s. they just take off and keep running.
I have a fully built motor with a 3.55 rear end possibility, but i'm not sure yet. A friend has a 3.73 for sale but it's just the gear. I have an automatic T4 trans too, what should i do. I dont care about mpg
I just picked up my car today from the shop after switching from 2.73 gears to 3.73 so my 2800 Stall and cam would work better together on my AOD. But now the car accelerates even slower and shutters the whole time I drive it and is worse off then before it won't even peel out. I need to know what they did wrong so I can cuss the shop out and get my car fixed right. Any help would be appreciated.
my 86 5.0 5 speed has 3.73's and i love 'em. pulls great. I cruise the hwy at 60mph and turn 1800rpm in 5th gear. and i can launch down into 2nd to blow the trans am out of the water. It all depends on your driving habits as everyone else has said. Pick one and if you don't like it, change it next winter
Why not go with a set of 3.90's, Motive Gear still has that ratio. I've had them in my 2004 MACH1, til this day never had a problem and they were installed when it hit 900 miles. It only has 6200 miles on it now, but still it has never given me any problems. 3.73's in the 89 notch, with a completely forged 306cu.in., 96 Cobra, w/4.10's and 20 mpg. no sh-t in the city but that is cruising in 4th gear and light on the right foot. And finally, 4.10's in the 01 Lightning but we won't go there with the mpg. You don't want to know, with 2.8 Kenne Bell and 19lbs. of boost. The point is, your car your choice, Mike.
I'm going to try this 3.90 gears. Hopefully they work-out. I wanted a lot of punch, but still want a little go on the freeway. Let's see what happens. The only other gears I have had are 3.55 gears in an aod convertible (IMO) I wasted my money. Those gears did not go well with the aod. If you have an aod and are staying natural aspired THAN DO NOT GET 3.55's you will be highly disappointed. May-be with a blower that would be a different story though.
My First Post... whoa.
Im just dumb and threw 4.30 gears in mine. its a tad quick.
Also does anyone got any idea what may be wrong wit my speedometer. It doesnt work at all and i checked the cable and the gear. Both were fine.
yea i had the same problem the gear on the output shaft of the tranny gets saddled in and it wont make contact
