i spoke with ford today and they were talking about reprogramming the PCM in addition to the speedo gear. apparently you can get it right on with a reprogram. anyway with my car (GT Vert and 94) im heavy except for the automatic. Im thinking 3.55 cuz of the drive from home to college (170 miles) but realized i only do that once or twice a semester. would 3.73s still be better just because of weight? also would like to rebuild Traction-Lok, If I get FMS gears, and ford rebuild kit with the clutch packs, shims, friction modifier and bolt (ya know?) what else would be required. Im very dumb with rear end parts and bearingss, shims, and the like Thank ya!

Hey,

I actually decided to take mine to a shop to be changed. I used the Richmond gears but they seem to wine at certain speeds. Strange! They work well though. Mine is a 95 vert and it improved the takeoff greatly! Took a lot of top end away though. It used to run around 90 mph at 1800 rpm's but not rins about 80 at 2200 or so. Now people are passing me out! Gas mileage wasn't really affected much. maybe a mile or 2 per gallon is all I've really noticed so far, and I basically drive it 1/3 in the city and 2/3's on the highway. Good Luck with your change!

I just had Richmond 3.73's installed, and I get a whine or whirrrrrr when in a coast situation. Under power they are okay, just when backing off the gas and kind of floating along they make some noise. Does anyone else have this experience?

Major difference in acceleration from the 2.73's!! Also, speedo is way way way off. I ordered a 23 tooth gear from Texas Mustang. According to the calculator in the Ford Racing catalog, I should be right on with the 23 tooth. Tires are 255-45R17's with a 5-speed.

Thanks

Use this guys door tag decoder. It's in the Featured Technical Information section. It's self-explanatory.

3.55's are working for me, but I have been thinking about the 3.73's as just somthing to upgrade.

3.55's are junk you dont want them dont waste your money. 4.10s are junk unless you race your car a lot. I run 3.73's and absolutely love them, I wouldnt go any higher until I make it my full drag car which will be in the next year. I have an 89 lx standard tranny pushing 557rwhp, 613 flywheel. I had the 3.73's in since stock motor and never had any problems in any hp range with it not pullying or anything. They are an awesome gear. I cruise on the highway at 85mph at 2,400 rpms in 5th gear. and I get awesome gas mileage, well I did with the slightly worked motor, havent driven the drag motor on the highway long distance yet. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME WITH 3.55

If your gears are not shimmed properly or just the slightest bit off they will make noise like a humming, or whining. Sometimes they just need to wear in a bit, but if this noise doesnt go away within one to two days I would bring it back to the shop and make them fix it cause they ****** up.

BTW. I am a mechanic who builds mustangs all years for racing so if anyone has any questions just ask, and I will try to answer and if I can't I will find out for you and let you know.

Don't even bother with 3.55s, my 88LX has them and I cant stand it. I'm gonna swap my gears and drop in my 3.73s.

I just wanted to put in my 2 cents.First of all to each his own.I know the first post in this thread is like two years old but i think people didn't realize he had a 97 cobra. Why would anyone suggest putting 3.55's or 3.73's in.That would be like suggesting 3.08's or 3.27's for a fox body(5 liter).I have a 98 cobra with 4.30's and they are perfect. Before anybody spends their money on gears make sure you do your homework so that you wont have to change them again just because the gears wasn't enough.
