Default Alternator!!

Last friday my alternator went to hell. As I was driving all the power went out slowly in my car. At first I thought it was the cheap radio in it. Then one by one everything else went. Stuck in the pouring down rain waiting for the tow truck. I popped the hood and noticed the tastey smell of burned wires..To my surprise the alternator was very hot.The smell coming from it..Then I noticed a wire coming off the starter relay that went off into a loom.. I unplugged the Alt. And thouched this wire back together..What do you know I had power again. Once I plugged the Alt. back in the wire got hot..Well this is my story now for the questions

1) What could have failed in the Alt.?

2) What is a good alternator to get? I have had some options. I can get a 95 amp reman. For about $139...I can get a 80 amp at idle with 140 amp high RPM top for $225.(new)
The reman Alt. I will have to change my wires from a plug to a circle connector. The new Alt. Is a direct replacement
The battery guy said the it would be better to cut old wirs and put on circle connector..

any opinions welcome

by the way the tow truck driver wrecked my car when he dropped it off that topped the friday night

The 130amp 3g as described in our tech section is a very good replacement to the original configuration. The install is not that hard and is a better alternator than the old style.

I believe that Ford had an issue with the alternator wiring and some companies supply you with a new short section of connector and harness that has to be soldered in for a proper repair.

But if you want to stick to original then I would get the highest rated alt I could find.

On mine I had to solder on new wires to each connector and buy the new connections. The other ones were dry rotted and nasty. These ones were a direct fit. I got the parts at Oreilly auto parts if I am not mistaken .

I got my alternator at Autozone. I kind of dont like the amount of power it puts out. If I put on the a/c blower and lights, it will drop inbetween the middle and low on the voltage meter. If I were to put on my subs with that combination, I imagine it would die. This is with a brand new 800amp cold 1000 warm cranking amps duralast gold battery.

http://www.pa-performance.com/ they have the best alternators period (it's not the one i am using but i am very much considering the switch)

You can get a
$289 130amp, 100 Amps idle 200 amps load max
$199 130amp, 80 Amps idle 160 amps load max

You can get those polished or powder coated too for extra $$

Go to ebay & check out the alternators for mustangs, they seem to have pretty good deals on them.
