Default anyone replace or repair their own convertible top?

I have some tears in my convertible top (on the side behind the glass) When I bought this the guy included the pre-cut replacement material for the top. Just wondering if anyone has attempted to install one before. Would it be easier to buy the complete frame etc. from a junkyard?
Also there was a small repair done to the other side where it looks like they used some kind of silicone (?) or something & appears to be holding up real well---any idea what that mighta been? Thanks again.

I have done this and it is easier than you think. The top is held on with tack strips bolted to the car which the cover is stapled to, yes stapled. The rear window is on one strip, rear quarters are on two others. Above the rear window is another tack strip that is stapled to and coverd with the plasic cover with chrome ends. The front section is glued on If I remember correctly, its been 6 years since I did it. Use good 3M spray adhesive glue. I had no experience with it before and it only took a day. Just be careful when disassembling and pay attention to how it goes together. It did take me a couple of tries on the rear quarters to get the wrinkles out and get it perfect, had to blot it on and off a couple of times and restaple to smooth it out. Any way there are some good books out if you are not that comfortable with it. This is a link to a guy who sells a really good one on the Mustang:

Good luck, it really is fairly easy to do. Check my gallery if you would like to see how it came out six years ago. (85newfiegt)
