Hi, I'm new to the forum, though I'm a normal forum fly at a bunch of other forums... Hoping someone can help me out.... I've got a '79 Mustang.... It's been alot of things in it's life so far... And I'm turning it into something else again... After a misfortunate car fire, I'm restoring the car, again.... Here's what I'm wanting to do, but cant find the detailed imformation I need... I'm stuffin her with a 351W.. No big deal... But I'm wanting to go with fuel injection this time. Tired of messin with carbs, and I dont want a roots type supercharger stickin out of the hood... I dont plan on stickin a supercharger on it at first.. I'd rather get the kinks worked out first.. Trying to deal with one thing at a time.... Now I need imformation about stickin fuel injection in this car... But I've also been playing with the idea of running a computer that I can tune with a laptop... That way I can stick her on a dyno, and tune it myself... I dont like people messin with my stuff, and it would be a good learning experience for me... So any imformation any of you can give me would be great! I've been looking everywhere, and have found lots of imformation, but I need it to be more detailed. Parts lists, things to watch out for, things like that... I've never done a swap this involved, and nobody I know even likes Mustangs, so they know nothing about them. I know more than my fair share, but obviously not about this....
Also, I need some opinions about engine parts... I've built mild, engines, and I've built them wild.. ( street/performance, and used for drag racing )... But I have no experience on forced induction engines... First off, here's what I plan to do with the car... I want it streetable most of all.. And I'm also shooting for 10's in the 1/4.. I also plan to show it. It wont be drove much, cuz I just dont have the time. I plan on taking it to some big race functions, just for fun.. I'd like the ability to drive it out of town, though it will probably only leave town on a trailer. This is why I'm considering a Supercharger.. That way I can leave the engine itself desently mild, and reliable.. But I've been eyeballing Edelbrocks Victor Jr set up.. Heads, intake yada yada.. But I dont have any experience with it.. I'm curious as to how it would behave on the street, and how well it would work with forced induction... If anybody has any idea's about this, or better sujections it would be greatly appreciated..
While I'm at it, what do you guys know about Ford 4 speed Top Loaders? I have one, and from what I know about it, it would be tough to tear it up. But I'm worried about highway traveling, with probably 4:10 gears ( I'm going with 3:73's first off, if it's not enough I'll go deeper ).. Or would I be better off going with a Tremec TKO 5-Speed? I've also been looking at the Richmond 6 speed.... But then again, I'm worried about how any of these trannys will hold up to the abuse. I'm not a fan of auto trannys, so thats out of the question. I've had auto trannys built before that were supposed to be bulitproof for my application, and still tore um up in a 12 second car. So I'm not fond of them. I'm not worried about money, although I dont make much, after time it builds up... I may be 40 yrs old by the time I'm done.. But this car means alot to me, and I'm tired of how people talk about the 79 Mustang's.. So I'm building it for me, and to show just because it isnt popular, it cant be a fast good looking car. It's real hard finding parts for a 79, interior parts are almost impossible unless it's out of a junk yard. Then looking for used *black* interior parts, well it's an neverending search. Since the fire took out the dash, I'm looking into sticking a '93 dash in it. Not what I really want to do, but finding the same style dash has not been going well. I'd rather it be a 79 Mustang, not a mutt. Sorry for such a long post. But I have alot of questions, with no answers. Thanks in advance for imformation.. And I look forward to being on this forum, and helping out when I can
10 on a mustang you'll need about +600 hp depending on weight. I think edelbrock give a setup for a +600ph motor on the website. I'm using a C4 right now(hopefuly not for much longer) so they will hold up
Black is the hardest color to find. It is also the rarest color for that year. If you can't find original black. You'll might have to paint the your intrior like I did.

Black,79 Mustang mostly carbon fiber/kevlar body, M-2300-k brake kit, full roll cage, maximum motorsport suspension, custom geared 6 speed, 2 inch rear fender flares, 1 inch front, motor being built (no eta). Looks like the Mad Max interseptor and weighs about 1800lbs w/o motor (450hp 351w installed to move the car around)
Black, 82 Capri RS 5.0L, B303, 1.7 rockers, World 180 heads, +150hp N.O.S, Turbo coupe rear end, T-56(tremec tko would be beter), 80 cobra nose
Thats what I was expecting, 550 to 600 HP.. Pretty big number to reach for, which is the reason I tossed the idea of a 302. I'm goina try my best to get it there. I'm still in the process of building the car itself to handle it.. Thats what I've been spending most of my time on, making the chassis stronger.. Then figuring out the best ways to grab traction, which is hard to speculate when it doesnt even have a drivetrain yet. 10's is in a area I know nothing about, yet... So it's goina be alot of trial and error.. Which I think is the most fun about it, just hurts the wallet. I cant wait to get to that point, been a year so far that I havnt been able to drive the car.. I'm sure it's goina be many more till I do...
How well are your painted interior parts holding up? I do have a dash I painted, but it's brittle. Sat out in the open to long.
Where did you get your carbon fiber/kevlar body parts at? I'd like to run it on the front of the car.. But I'm goina leave the rest of it alone. Trying to drop weight in the front.. A tubular K-member, and coil over set up are on my list.. So that alone is going to be a desent weight drop. I'm trying to keep the whole car light.. But it's going to be complete, not gutted.. Still goina have a good sound sys and all that, which most of that will be on the rear wheels, so it should work to my advantage.. So I'm trying to use light weight parts where I can... You have any pics of your '79 Mad Max?

Phuck phuck phuck! I had a really long reply and tried to post a file and lost the reply!
Anyways I've seen stangs run high nine's with 570hp.
Welcome to AFM!
I think you will find that this forum room can be very very useful.
Here's the short, short version of what I wrote previously.
I'd go with #24's or #30 when it's still NA. Then go to at least #42's when you get your blower. On the NA engine you want a compression ratio of about 8:1. This way you can run lots of boost. Also I'd think about an intercooler. Heads I'd go with ported tfs high ports. Intake I'd do a tfs 351W extrude honed intake. Also talk to tmoss about intakes. He's a genus when it comes to this kinna stuff. He also does a very good job of porting. He edited a paper on this which was written by maxflow (which is what I tried to post). For a cam I'd go with an ed curtis custom grind cam. This way it will work with your combo. If you don't know he's the best in the business. If you want to use the stock assories talk to march performance www.marchperf.com . If you need more info on your combo talk to bennett racing www.bennettracing.com . They'll hook you up. They also make a gt40 upper made specifically made for forced air applications. The only thing is when your engine is still NA you might see a huge loss in low end torque. You can fix this with a 1' heat spacer and take if off when you get a blower. If you still want the article I can send it to you via email. Just PM me and I'll send it to you.
I have an 82 gt but from what you have said maybe the interior is not interchangable (I don't know). But on the off chance that it is this car happens to be a parts car and is also black inside and out.
84GT,
I pretty sure the only thing different about the dash on the '82 is the gauge cover ( forgot the real name ) which isnt no big deal because I have about 4 of um.. But other than that they should be the exact same maybe different gauge set up, not sure since I havnt seen the inside of a 82.... The more I think about it though, a '93 dash would be pretty cool to have.. The different gauges, more spots to stick gauges ( tach yada yada ).. More aftermarket dress up's for them too.. Never seen any dress up's for 79-82 dashes... I'm fighting back and forth with myself about it... It would be easier since I'm goina have to run different wiring harness, save alot of headaches later on with the gauges and such... But then again, I've put alot of work into the heater/AC box to shave off weight, reseal it, new vaccum motors.. And I dont think I'd beable to use this one with a newer dash... I'll find out sooner or later... But if your parting out your 82 I'll keep you in mind...
Giddyup306, I'm building the engine for the supercharger.. So with not running one for the short time I wont have it installed, I'm not expecting it to perform very well. I'd just rather not run one while breaking the engine in ( my heavy foot may take over my rational side ). That and dealing with the fuel injection, I dont want to take any risks, cuz I'm sure I'm goina run into alot of problems at first. Since this is my first time doing something like this, I'm just tryin to play it safe. Maybe some of it is overkill, but I dont like redoing things later on.. I'll PM you with my E-mail addy..... I'm still looking at a long time till I'm ready to start with the engine setup, just getting whatever imformation I can get, so when the point comes I can just order the parts, and toss it together.. That way there will be no doubt in my mind what I'm goina do next... I'm not even completely done with the car yet, but I dont lack much till I need to start on the wiring. The front suspension is all I lack for suspension and chassis... The rest is interior, and drivetrain.. So I've got alot to do, but I'd rather figure things out now, than when I'm elbow deep in it..
Wheelieboy79, the dash boards (and covers) are all the same for the '79-'86 style fox bodies. The face plates came in Black ('82 GT's), Engine Turned ('79-'81 Cobras, '79 Pace Cars), soft felt ('84-'86 SVO), Simulated woodgrain, and a graph paper pattern. As you know, the guages are different, and can be changed.
Since this car has limited street use why not save money skipping on the blower and build the motor itself to run high 10s. Run Canfield 192cc or AFR 205 heads, 11.1 or 12.1 CR, Anderson Hi-rev N-91 or N-113 hydraulic roller cam, TFS ported 351W intake or Edelbrock 351 air gap victor. Use a 83mm plus air meter with a 80mm high flow TB. Use 38lb injectors and two fuel pumps along with larger fuel rails. Find an 8.8 rear along with a 4.56 gear and a locker for street use. I would install a roll cage, connect sub frames and use a anti roll bar kit above axle housing. A tremec would work fine as Bob Hanlon of Hanlon Motorsports uses a Tremec to run 9s. A 28" tall 10 inch slick would be a good start and on the street the overdrive trans will allow 65mph highway cruising under 3000 rpm on a 26" tire.
im with EzBNME. (every time i see that name i wanna call ya enzime..lol never mind) anyhow if your going the way you saying you wallet must be pretty deep. id go NA setup and just up the compression and youd be in that area. besides its more impressive. oh ya i painted my dash with some outdoor grill paint, nice luster and doesnt seem to chip. looks stock serprised a lot of people this weekend at the hangout. oh ya if you wanna hit that type of time in the quarter....it may be more in your interest to use race prepped c4. that much power is just brutal on a clutch.

Update: JLT CAI, SLP LM2 catback,
Parts in the basement : To much to list. heres a hint..it involves a watts link and turbos.
It all depends on the paint. I used the paint that was designed for vinal. So far it hasn't chipped or anything. As long as you wash the suface down and scuff it to a scotch bite pad it will stick fine. I get some more info on the type of paint it is.

I like the challenge of doing something I've never done before... Thats why I've desided to do it this way.... Though if things dont work out right, it will probably get a fuel injected 351... I'll get in the 10's either way, if I dont the first time, then I'll keep trying ( I'm pretty sure I will the first time though, or be very close to it )...... But since I'd like to keep it very streetable, reliable, show the car... A supercharger seems the way to go... That and I love the sound.... A turbo more so, but thats nothing but a headache to install one... I used to hate SC'ers, I never saw myself considering one... But now I'm even thinkin bout stickin one of my daily.. A '97 Dodge Ram 4X4 with a 318... It aint your normal Dodge I tow alot with it ( live on a ranch ), and I havnt towed a load that it cant handle yet..... 33 inch A/T tires dont last long either. Grabs a 3rd gear stratch everyonce in a while.. I've done a few things to it and I might be getting a supercharger sometime in the near future....
I painted the dash I have with vinal paint.. Looks good, feels like paint though which I dont care for, but I have my doubts about the dash itself... Pretty brittle... So I probably wont use it...I'm just worried about it peeling off on of these years. I took a scotch brite pad to it after I painted it, to see how well it would hold up.. It stayed on. When I find a good one, I'm goina have a appolstery shop dye it.. I've been quoted 65 bucks on doing the dash.. Which aint bad, considering it will last forever, and it feels/looks factory.... Once I deside which dash I'm goina use thats what I'm going to do...
Love those old brittle dashes and dash pads. mine held up fine untill I started put in a stiffer suspention. That's when it started to crack all over the place. When it does that you have a few things you can do. You can replace the dashboard, gat an aftermarket dash, or just make your own. If you're going to be racing the car then make one similar to the one you want.
One last thing. Make a mold of the dash you want. That way you can get a fiberglass dash that is realy light. They only weigh about 7lbs
