5.0, in a ranger?

my younger brother just bought him a 93 ranger, with a 2.3L in it. we have discussed a turbo from an SVO if possible or putting a 5.0 in it. my question's are....

can a 5.0 fit?
can it be EFI?
what is a rough estimate on a price, i can find a engine cheap, just wondering about brackets and all the nice things like that.
will the computer work or will a new one be needed?
lastly, will the transmission work? its a 5 speed right now, but i dont konw what kinda 5 speed is in it. im sure its not a t-5, but i would like to keep it a stick if possible.

thanks.

The 5.0 in a ranger is/should not be that big of a task. No more so than a 305 in a S10. The tranny in that truck should be a T-5, unless they put something different in Rangers that I am not aware. You should also be able to run EFI on it, just have to get the computer out of the donor car. Should run very well as the Ranger's don't weight that much.

if you could find a donor car with complete engine and harness id say that would prob be the cheapest. either way youd have to rebuild the engine to place a turbo on it or at least soon there after. one my dads buddies has a 390 in a ranger. talk about shock when you pop the hood. only thing that really makes you wond is the dual 3 inch tail pipes poking out the back. oh ya and of course the old school nascar sound.

A buddy of mine put a 94 5.0L. in a Bronco II. EFI and all. That little thing is fast. It was like converting a 4cyl to 5.0L swap in a mustang. The only problem was the exhaust. He had to use old 351 manifolds from a car to get the clearance correct. Other than that it was a faily straigh forward swap.

Black,79 Mustang mostly carbon fiber/kevlar body, M-2300-k brake kit, full roll cage, maximum motorsport suspension, custom geared 6 speed, 2 inch rear fender flares, 1 inch front, motor being built (no eta). Looks like the Mad Max interseptor and weighs about 1800lbs w/o motor (450hp 351w installed to move the car around)
Black, 82 Capri RS 5.0L, B303, 1.7 rockers, World 180 heads, +150hp N.O.S, Turbo coupe rear end, T-56(tremec tko would be beter), 80 cobra nose

i checked into that company twister mentioned and they have a swap kit that even includes long tube headers. maybe when i get a 331 this summer, hopefully, ill put my old 5.0 in it. this is looking better and better. the only problem is what about the computer and such. im still comfused about that process.

When you pull the motor out of your donor car, you have to take all the computer, wiring harness, ecu, you know all the electronic b.s. that makes the 5.0 go kaboom. Also some things to keep in mind would be the rearend. Will the rearend in it hold up to v-8 ponies??? And your going to need an aftermarket fuel pump because most 5.0 are in tank, so you will need an in-line pump. Also you need to find out how you plan on cooling her down, you will probably need the 5.0 radiator too.

Another way to get the computer and wiring is, find a used computer, Duke probably has some, and get the Engine Harness and Controls Package from Jegs, its a FMS pack for 86-93 5.0 or 5.8.

Nobody mentioned swapping in an Explorer 5.0. A friend of mine did this.

The headers work, and the water pump is roughly 2" shorter. Brackets and all will fit. If not, at least you could use the headers and shorter water pump/timing cover.

By the way, Rangers did not use a T-5

explorer parts vehicles are hard to find especially a unmolested 5.0 explorer. and your correct the ranger doesnot use a t-5. and yes the rear will need to be upgraded.

I have researched this subject to the point of exhaustion. If it were me, I would probably just buy a kit from someone to do the swap. There isn't very much engineering involved, but alot of parts hunting. For example, I'm pretty sure the motor mounts that you need are from an 85 GT and you simply use the left one on the right side of the ranger and vice versa.

Long story short, I would research more on the net to find out what you need.http://www.rangerpowersports.com/

That link will net you more information that you'll find here. Also, they made rangers with 8.8 rear ends. I would buy one of those and put in a locker w/ some 3.73s or get one from a mustang. The mustang and ranger 8.8s use different differentials so you can't install gears or a differential from a mustang without replacing both, but you can install all of the mustang 8.8 guts. I have a friend who has done this.

E-mail me if you have any other questions.

I believe Doug is right about the mounts. Here is another site to check out.

http://www.therangerstation.com/

I keep forgetting I did a how to swap for a 3.8 for them a while ago. It is almost the same

But here is the V8
