Default 1994 Mustang automatic Transmission problem

So from last post in Novemeber 2007, i got my engine rebuilt. Now about month after, my transmission is starting to act up. Im not big on car knowledge so i will try to explain my problem. The car now has 177,500 miles on it. The first thing i noticed was, about 2 weeks ago, when trying to put my car in reverse or in drive, on a could start without letting it warm up, the car would not move. The engine reved up but not the car. After letting it warm up it worked fine. Now, for about a week and a half, im noticing when on the driving on the streets the car feels like its coasting, not going into drive, but feels like its in 2nd or 3rd gear, even when im pressing on the gas, there is no pickup. Then eventually i will feel a heavy jerk, and it runs in the normal drive position, until i hit the breaks, and then the samething starts over again. WHen im on the freeway, when on the on ramp, trying to merge it coast, with pressing the gas, then jerks, and goes to normal. As long as i stay above around 40, it runs fine, and i can speed up with no problems.
Whats the problem? I have read, that it could be my torque converter. i have a qoute of about $1200.00 to rebuild. I really dont want to pay that much after spending $1500.00 on a engine ovehaul. I found online another 5.0 owner selling his 89 5.0 auto tranny with 5k on it for $300.00. Will a 89 auto tranny fit a 94, and Is this a great deal, or should i just have my tranny rebuild? Also what should i look for when checking out his tranny? Someone told me to make sure it comes with the torque converter. anything els?

hmm...how much power is your motor making...to much could have broke the tranny ..also it can just be going out anyways...but im not sure because the computer switches gears on the AOD-E and a AOD is machnical ...not sure if it would work im sure you can make it...but i think they are physicaliy the same

The AOD won't work properly without some tuning in your computer.

Have you considered replacing the MLPS (manual level position sensor) on the side of the transmission. It sounds like you are having problems there. Plus it's a cheap replacement compared to your other alternatives.

This sounds to me like the tranny is just tired. Things don't last forever and with 177000 miles it's about time for it to be rebuilt. I know you don't want to hear it but when the tranny is acting that way, in every way you described, the clutches are worn down and the bands are shot. It isn't the converter, it's internal. And no, the AOD will not go in your 94 and work properly. The AODE you have has electronic overdrive, if you modify the AOD for this feature, it'll work then but it costs. Either way, you're looking at more money. It'd be about the same cost to have it rebuilt as it would to buy a new tranny from a reputable builder like Performance Automatic, Dynamic Racing Transmissions, even a B&M or TCI AODE would work. The converter is a separate thing, meaning it has it's own price and should be made to your car's particular combination. They'll ask a barrage of questions about the car, so they can make it for you.

So i was driving it today, and as i put it in reverse to back up the small hill in my driveway, the transmission slipped and the car started rolling forward. I put into to drive and then back into reverse and no problem. Thanks for answering the 89 transmission question. I have no idea what AOD & AODE means, but it seems to be one is the earlier model, and the other the later model. Whats a average price for having it rebuild, and what should be done. The mechanic who overhauled my engine, says he can rebuild the transmssion, but said it would range anywhere from $500-1500 for a rebuild, it just depends on the problem (sounds like a troubleshoot instead of rebuild). Or should i just have him rebuild, and not troubleshoot? I called another shop and they told me $1200.00 for a rebuilt transmission.

the aod was ened in 93 for stangs and the aode started in 94

$500-$1500 sounds about right since it depends on what all it needs

The "E" is for the electronic enabling of overdrive. And the rebuild cost depends on what you want put into it. Back to stock (not recommended) would be the $500-$750 range. Get the best parts you can afford, I understand about budgets but if you're going to keep the car, it deserves the best you can get. You could get a rebuild kit yourself, and have someone assemble it for you, you can actually save money doing it this way. Most shops inflate the parts prices because most customers don't know where to get them or how to get them or what to get or how much the parts cost. Of course most of the cost is labor but saving on the cost of the parts can be done, even when getting better parts.

Ok, so i called a Transmission shop today, and told them the story about the car. He said it sounds like a wire regrounding problem, and if that was the problem, it would be about $15.00 to fix. Also my check engine light is on, and the machanic who did the engine said he pulled the codes, and I need new catalytic convertors. Could this cause my transmission to mess up. He said the catalytics where not needed right now, and could wait until i had to get the car smogged anain.

If i get the tranny rebuild, i would like to buy my own parts. What do i need, and where can i get it from? Im in southern cali.

NOTHING costs $15.00 to fix. it costs more than that to fix you're car being low on gas. be VERY wary of the cheap fix. 99 out-of 100 times it's not cheap and it doesn't fix it.
level 10 in hamburg, n.j. is a reputable transmission specialty business. the boys @ lentech & performance automatic are pretty good too.
the aod-e is a fine transmission and can be beefed-up to handle all but the sickest amounts of h/p & torque. it just depends on what you want and how much you WILL spend. give them a call, tell them what you've got & what you want. their reccomendation will be about as good as it gets.

yea eagle is right...thats what i like to do...buy the part...and have someone put it in....its cheaper better way

Ok so i talked to the mechanic who rebuilt my engine. He said it sounds like my clutch gears is gone, and is hitting metal to metal, and thats why its shifting hard, and slipping. He said he would rebuild and replace all the hard parts in my trany for $1000 including labor. Now i have been checking out some of the other post, and some people had similar problems, and said it was a sensor. so im confussed right now. Im thinking about taking it to a trany shop, and skip my mechanic. I will have the shop read the codes, and test drive it.

I am having the same problem with my 94 gt, I took the car to a amaco tranny shop and had the transmission rebuilt ($1,200) w/all new parts. The car drove perfect on the 20 mile drive home then it started doing the same thing again, I took it back and they went through the trans again and told me that everything was right. I took the car home and I am still having the same problems. While driving sometimes it seems to go into neutral and then on other times it will downshift on it's own. It happened once on a wet road while I was accelerating and I ended up spinning sideways. While this incident was somewhat exciting, it isn't something I want to pe-peat.
Any suggestions?

Yours sounds like it could be a Manual Lever Position Sensor problem.

Good luck tranny shops are some shady places. I found a guy thats better than all the local shops and he drinks beer! I buy a 12 pack and he shows me what broke! Still costs a sh*t ton of money but comes back fixed!>
