i've had mine to 140 a couple of times on a looong straight road and mine's an automatic too. yours should definitely do better than 115. never had a problem with mine hitting a speed limiter but have read that chip companies can eliminate that on cars that came so programmed.
A stock manual 5.0 should top out at about 140 and an automatic at about 135. In the case of an automatic with a stock 2.73 rear end, that top speed will be reached in 3rd gear. Overdrive is ridiculously tall and you'd be lucky to reach 125 in that gear even on a long stretch of road. If there's a slight headwind, 115 is probably the limit.
Is it possible that he has a v6 computer instead of the gt computer. I think you should get a re-tune. or you have a hypertec chip programed so that your limiter is 115. I remember my uncle talking about his on his Sierra denali. He said you can make it have a cut of and 115 120 135 and what not.

when i was younger and dumber (not that i'm all that much smarter now) i somehow managed to top mine out on interstate35 just north of austin. no idea how i pulled that one off w/o going to jail. be careful! this forum needs all the members intact to keep on giving good info. back to the question though... what kind of rpm's are you running when you're topping out at 115?
