Sometimes we learn something that helps us and we need to pass these things on to the new guys. I have two things that I used this past week that is just natural to me but may be helpful to others.
#1. I keep several peices of 5/16" fuel line hose in my tool box. One about 6" long and one 8" long. I use these to take spark plugs out and put them back in. When taking the spark plugs out I break them all loose and then one by one I push the 5/16" fuel on the plug and then unscrew the plug. The fuel line grabs the plug, works kind of like a wabbler and keeps a good hold on it so, you don't drop it. When installing the plugs the fuel line holds the plug well and helps to gently install the plug and again works sort of like a wabbler to help get the treads started gently and correctly.
#2. This week I was installing the headers and the gasket kept falling out of place so, I used another old trick. I tied the gasket in place with dental floss. The dental floss (or you can use fishing line) holds the gasket in place until you get some bolts started The floss will melt away and you never know it was there but it helped a lot.
#3. I also use dental floss to hold my valve cover gaskets in place. Usually, I put gasket sealer on the valve cover then install the valve cover gasket onto the valve cover and tie it in place with dental floss then I set it down on a bench and put some motor manuals on it and let it sit long enough for the sealer to set up. Then (later) put the sealant on the gasket and install the valve cover onto the motor. With the dental floss and first sealant hard you have a lot less chance that the gasket will slip out. This helps to get the bolts a bit tighter and helps to stop leaks. (Don't over tighten the bolts tooooo much. I always have to be careful about this).
ANTI SIEZE : Everyone should have a can of this stuff in their garage. I put it on EVERY bolt and spark plug I install.
WHITE LITHIUM GREASE: Again, should be used on all of your electrical connections
Take an old set of wire cutters and fill the indent on the back side with silicone, when it dries take a razor blade and gently slice it down the center. Next time when you are cutting wires or tie wraps you wont have to worry about the pieces flying everywhere on the floor of your car.
WD40 (or similar store brand products) works wonders for cleaning the grease and oil off of your tools, especially the soft grip screwdrivers. It also works wonders if you get water in your distributor cap and your car wont start, spray the inside of the cap, wait a second and your car will start.
Spray WD40 on the inside of that rubber grommet that is inside of your spark plug socket.... Youll never have it stick on another plug.
Cant get a bolt started by hand because it is in an awkward place? Take a piece of paper and hold it inside your socket and push your bolt in there so it is snug, use an extension and start your bolt.
---have some more, but we will see where this thread goes----
Utilize AFM so when you run in to trouble somone usually has had the same occurance and they will be able to help you out!
lmao good point.
