Default 1994 Cobra Parking Brake not working properly, failure, help!

Heres the rundown.

1994 Mustang Cobra
95,000 miles
manual trans.

My parking brake stopped working. I set it, went inside, and my car rolled down into the street. So I removed the wheels, and the pads looked pretty worn as well as the rotors. So I went ahead and replaced the pads and rotors. The problem is even worse.

Whereas before the parking brake would set, and eventually fail--Now it is like I have no parking brake. I will pull up on handle (handle still has tension) but my car will roll as if there is absolutely no parking brake.

Anyone have any ideas.

Might be a problem with the e brake cable, could be kinked, frayed or broken.

I have the car in for the ebrake recall fix right now. I doubt that will solve the problem but hopefully it will lead me to the answer. If anyone else has had experience with a similar problem, please let me know.

Ok, so recall work didnt fix the problem. Cable is fine, no cracks, frays, nothing.

Do you have to adjust the rear brakes after installing new pads? Or do they self-adjust like the front ones?

they should self adjust, the parking brake on my 94 cobra doesn't hold to well either, its just not the best design, so i just leave it in 1st gear and set he parking brake too

i had the same problem on my 94 vert. turns out the tension coil spring in my ebrake wore out. heres what to check for, take the center console out or remove the cup holder/center storage, you just need to see the cable. pull up on the handle and see if the cable moves when you pull and release it. if it does not move then your tension coil is bad and youll need a new ebrake. if it does move then it will probrably need to be adjusted at the rear wheels

So, I just want to update. I had my car at my mechanic for the squeeky front right wheel (when turned right, wheel was squeeking really annoyingly). Anyways that turned out to be a outer tie rod. So I asked him abou the parking brake and I wan told I needed new calipers, so I went out a got new caliper, rotors, and pads. Figured why not do it all at once. Well, I replaced everything and still the same problem. No parking brake.

So my problem has to be with the parking brake line somewhere. I'll take a look under the center console tomorrow. I appreciate any help, and I'll keep you updated.

PS: I got the calipers for $45 each at Advance Auto. Everywhere else they were $100 each at least.

I looked at the ebrake cable, and it really doesnt move very much at all. When the ebrake is pulled, tt kind of just pulls snug, rather than sliding towards the front of the car. Is this normal? Or should there be a lot of travel with the parking brake cable? If anyone has any experience with it, I appreciate any help.

Ok so I figured out the problem. I just like to update my threads so anyone else who comes across it in the future has a conclusive read.

So my problem was the calipers. I just had to wait a few days for them to self-adjust themselves enough to where the parking brake would hold again. Heres what I've come across as far as a checklist (and the remedies in parentheses)

-Check cable for freys, or broken (get new cable)
-Is tension still on the ebrake handle? (if no tension, need new ebrake assembly)
-Check pads and rotors (replace if worn)
-All of the above is fine, and parking brake wont hold car (replace calipers, piston is not ratcheting out).

That might not be everything, but it should solve most problems. Hope this helps someone.

it sounds like a stretched cable or no tension on the handle

New update.

So the parking brake was never fixed. I ended up replacing the parking brake cables, and man were they nasty.

Tears in the plastic sheath, rusty wire. I couldn't even move the cable by hand.

The nice new ones went on really east, and the ebrake is awesome now. Its like a brand new car where you barely need any strength to set it, and it holds great on any incline.

It was worth $50. Wish I wouldve started with cables though.
