So last year I was about to get some H/I/C but one of my lovely
organs decided to take a dump on me!!!
So need less to say I'm back in the game and looking for a nice top end package.
I've looked at holly, edel, trick flow, and afr heads.
All of which look nice but I couldnt tell you my head from my a$$ when it comes to which ones to get!
I've also seen it said some pistons need to be notched?
What kinda heads and cam can I get that I wont have to do this?
I want a nasty cam loop but nothing that will kill the proformance wise.
Over all I want the best bang for my buck price is not a problem.
Also what would I also need?
Bigger injectors? I'm running #24 right now. What will I need to do so the cumpeter reads everything right? I know gettting a tune would a chip help also?
Larger fule pump, anything else?
And thank you all once again for the help!!
Jason

Id get a set of AFR 165 or 185. Although the 185 might require pistons to be flycut. 24's will work just need calibrated MAF. You could upgrade to a 255lph pump but may not have to, yet. Youll definetly want a custom tune. As far as cam TFS 2 or an x303 would give a good loop. You may consider a Comp cam also.
+1 on the AFR's. The cam specs will probably determine if you need to notch the 185's but I would call and ask. You could always get a custom grind cam. Are you upgrading the rocker arms? I would get the 190 or 255 pump and like mentioned the 24's will be fine.

$$$ is no object?! I say.... LOAN ME SOME MONEY! LoL
Seriously though, it all depends on how big you wanna go. Are you wanting a Daily Driver with little to no track time? Or Daily Driver/Weekend Warrior? Or all out track machine?
I am going to guess and think you want a Daily Driver that you take to the track on the weekends...
I would go with AFR 165's, 1.7 roller rockers, either Holley, Edelbrock RPM II, or GT40 tubular intake (for the looks ), larger fuel pump (maybe a 255), and a Comp Cam. You could get a custom ground cam, but an off the shelf cam from COMP would work just fine. Then a well deserved dyno tune would suffice.
That would give you a pretty mean Street pounder.
One important question that I usually ask in this situation, is how many miles are on your engine right now?

It's only gets driven in the summer time and not every day in the summer. So it will be more of a joy rider and weekend racer.
The mileage JUST turned 70 thousand.
About 4-5 years ago I got it from a older guy for ten grand and it had 45 grand for the miles!!

70K miles is good, I was just making sure you weren't going to do all this to a 200K mile engine.
In that case, you could go with AFR 185's, an Edelbrock RPM II intake, either a custom grind or off the shelf cam from COMP CAMS and of course a dyno tune. I'm not sure if you have already deleted your A/C, but if not go ahead and do it since you only drive it occasionally in the summer. And if you can get away with it, take that smog pump out too. Just go with a shorter belt, no need for the replacement pullies.
What are your thoughts on NO2?

Either one of those would also be good. Reasonably priced too! There's a few kits out that would work well. Edelbrock is also good.

I talked with AFR a few times to get the best idea of clearance.
I called more then once over a few weks and so talked to a few people. They ALL agreed that the 185's were so close to a possible problem on a stock bottom end, with a e-cam, that I would be better off with the 165s and no issues....Didnt know then I would be stroking it with Probe forged pistons, with big enough valve reliefs to clear about ANYTHING or I would have gone with the 185's
Also most agree that the exhaust side of the small block Ford is the crappy part of the head, so with the AFR you get a 1.6 exhaust valve, and if I remember right, the BEST exhaust flow numbers I found, and the 165 and 185 share the same exhaust port numbers.
Im running on and on, and staring to sound like a dealer (Im not) but the real selling point for me was the AFR heads having a 3/4" deck thickness, when the next thickest was 5/8".
On a engine with really only 4 bolts per cylinder on the head...thicker HAS to be a good thing.

I was looking at the edelbrock rpm 2,
I was looking for what the power gains would be vs the stock cobra intake. The only info and numbers I found for the intake with that set up was on a 347. Nothing for the 302. With that being said,
I have no clue if the edel. will give me more power vs the cobra.
If there the same, there's no need to spend the money!
The full a/c is gone, coming up in the spring the smog pump will be gone to. From what I read it was a 89" belt.
I'm not a fan with the bottle. It's just more personel pref. I guess

I've decided on the heads after reading up on them some more and what you said.
The AFR 165 will be the head choice. There's no reason to risk a motor to get more power. I do plan to get a 347 down the road and by then I'll think about the 185.
The more info the better!!
I think I'm going to get AFR a call and see what the best cam would be for the heads once I find out what intake I'll be running. I want a cam that will give me the best sounding loop but also the best proformance.
Now is just the intake I need help with? There to dam many of them to pick!!!
What about roller rockers?
AFR 165 heads?
Go with a 1.6 or a 1.7 arm?
Once again thank you all!

my buddy has a 95gt with all the mods i have except he runns 3.55 gears with a t-5 and he has afr165 58cc heads and a trick flow street intake.
we both run the same cam and rocker ratio (1.7) and the cam has .544 lift and 274 dur but it is speced for 1.7 rockers....nether of us had a clearence problem and we both used clay to see.
i love comp cams, check out there extrem line
p.s....my best 1/4 time is 14.2 @ 97 (spinning like crazy on street tires)
he is in the low 13s @ 117mph (spinning like crazy on street tires)
so thats 12s with sticky tires

The AFR 165's will work great. I would call COMP CAMS and ask them about what cam would work best. I would trust the place that makes the cams over the people that make the heads. But that's just me.
The Cobra intake should work just fine with the heads. To compare the flow rates between a lot of the intakes, there is an article on this website that shows the different flow rates in CFM. And if I remember right the Edel RPM 2 was one of the top ones, but it just flowed a little better than the Cobra. I would definitely have the Cobra intake ported to match the heads to get the best results. http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/574.shtml
