Default aluminum flywheel or billet steel

i have a 5.0 engine and it was balanced when built (still in crate) to accept stock harmonic weight of 50oz (i have the fluiddampner 50 oz), now can i use an aluminum flywhel verses the billet steel (which is alot lighter)....my hole rotating assembly is probe ultralite, i was wondering if can i use an aluminum flywheel because they say the lighter the rotating assembly the less restriction of power, but i don't want to hurt to balancing of my motor...thanks for your help and advice

Does the engine already have a flywheel on it ? What does the manufacturer/engine builder reccomend you use ?

I would go with the lighter one . Just ask the builder what type of one was used to balance it . There are two theorys on flywheels . Lighter ones = less rotating mass for faster revving . Heavier ones = more momentum off the line . I think the lighter the better . But there is almost no differences in 1/4 times . I would deffinitely ask the builder for his oppinion .

thanks for your time, i will ask him....my engine set up in a 347 stroker, with .040 ultralight pistons, ultra light rods, with a cast steel crank, with new aluminum high port heads, o ringed heads, trickflow stage 2 cam with 1.7 rockers, custom ported holley 750 carb, march pulley set up, fluiddampner, 10.5 taylor wires, msd distributor, msd 6al, msd blaster coil, ....fms rear with 373 gears.....two reason for me telling you about my engine, do you still think i should use the lighter on with my set up, and also my friend went to a dyno this weekend and was very dpressed about his readings for the rwhp...can you give me a ball park of what my engine might have for rwhp...thanks again steve

I still say go light . I would venture my humble guess to your hp # as 475 hp And although your buddy is unhappy with his numbers on a dyno I'll bet he dosent complain about the car when he drives it dyno numbers dont mean crap . If you build a car for a number it really takes the fun out of it Know what I mean ?
