Default What oil should I use?

I have 135,000 on my cobra 5.0. I noticed a slight tic under heavy load recently and I am hoping it is just a bit low on oil but I just added two quarts the other day and used 10-W30 and someone told me I should be using at least 10-W40 and possible 20-W50 because of the advanced miles. What do you guys think?

MUSTANG LX NOTCHBACK... IT WOULD BE EASIER TO SAY WHAT IT DOESN'T HAVE. THERE ISN'T ENOUGH SPACE IN THE SIG SO JUST THE BASICS: 306,FULLY FORGED,VORTECH V2 SQ,TREMEC 3550,3.55'S AND A WHOLE LOT IN BETWEEN!

I always use Valvoline 10W30 and I have 185K miles on mine! Do you have the stock headers on yours?? That "tick" could possibly be a header/exhaust leak.

If it's real cold in the morning and my car has been sitting overnight, then I start my car I'll occasionally get a "tick" sound when it first starts, then it goes away as the RPM's drop.
130K isn't A LOT of miles but isn't isn't low miles either... 10W30!

10w30 is what you should use. as far as being low on oil did you check for any leaks? and I agree with 302feen as far as a tick sounds like header leak or somewhere on the exhaust.

10w-30 would be ok in cold weather, but would go to straight 30w for warmer weather. more importantly you need to figure out where your oil is going! 2 QUARTS?

personally i use ford motorcraft oil....... and 20-w50 is too much id say

and 2 quarts??
id pull your plugs and see if they have white deposits on them cuz that could be your answer

It is the rear main seal. It is loosing about that every 3000 miles. I just had headers installed. Should I check the bolts or have the guy that put them in check them?

If you have aftermarket headers then I would bet money that's where the "tick" is coming from. That's the one problem with changing headers is the bolts tend to back out.

Just check all of them. Tighten all of them starting from the middle two and work your way out, then run your engine for about 5 minutes and let it get warm (not HOT but warm) and then tighten the bolts again in the same way...

if the header gasket is leaking due to a few bolts backing out , the gasket needs to be replaced. This just happened to me, I install the headers made sure all bolts were tight and a month or 2 later 1 day I started hearing an exhaust leak on the pass side of the engine. Put the car on the lift check all bolts on the exhaust, then saw a bolt backing out of the header. The header still leaks a bit because the gasket now has a hole in it from the heat. This happened in 5 miles of driving

I paid a shop to install them about 2 weeks ago and they told me to drop it off and they would take care of it. They are good guys and I am sure they will take care of me.

I would think to use a thicker oil in warmer weather like 10w-40??? That's what I always assumed.

the rear main seal is a bit of a project to get to and it really really sucks if u have a clutch but if ur replacing it and u have a standard u might wanna consider a clutch at 130k while ur at it too if u have not already installed a better one but personally all weather all the time i use Castrol GTX 10-40w in all my 302s (bronco f150 mustang etc) and uhhh btw i have NEVER blown up a 302 and have had many over 250k lol the body usually goes before the motor... but just my own personal experience... hope my post helps

I agree that you need to change that rear main seal soon. And if you have a 5speed, then change the clutch. If you don't change the clutch while you're already in there, you'll regret it later on.
