I thought about doing the same thing but I read another article that convinced me to just go through the trouble and put the dummy on ill look for the link and put it up here as soon as i find it or quote it
here we go this was taken from an older post I found by rj0886 a "senior member" of AFM>
"I have told this story several times on this forum but I think it bears repeating one more time.
If you do the smog pump delete, PLEASE....spend the $70 and get the dummy pulley that goes in place of the pump and do not just go with a shorter belt. I had a 1990 LX that I just got done dropping in a blown 347 stroker and spent over $7k on it. I went and did the delete and didn't think about the dummy pulley, I just said, hell, I'll just throw a shorter belt on it and call it good. Over the course of 2 years, I burnt up 5 alternators and finally, on the last one, it overheated to the point where it caught fire. I was on my way to work one morning and smoke and flames started billowing out from under the hood while I was driving. Long story short, the car burnt to the point where it was a total loss. It started at the alternator and was caused by the undue stress the alt. shaft was under because of the shorter belt.
I'm not saying this happens to everyone but I promise you, it happened to me and had I just spent another $70, I'd still be driving my baby.
