Default Gauge cluster questions? For a swap.

Hey Guys,

I am sorry if this was posted in the wrong section but I figure that some of you guys with this year model have already had to or just taken these clusters out to swap.

(A little background, I am swapping a 5.0 into my 2003 V6 car).

Does anyone know if the clusters in the 1994-1995's are wired the same as the 1999-2004? Or would the gauges that are already in my 2003 work off of the 1994-1995 computer.

This I am thinking I already have the answer to but I am unsure. I was thinking that doing so would save me a ton on the need to buy aftermarket gauges. I am thinking from what I have seen that the dashes are nearly identical so it would work. I would also snatch the fuse block. I have seen guys swap modular engines 4.6/5.4 into 5.0 Foxbodies and 1994-1995 SN-95's and still use the stock gauges. I am unsure how it had to be wired though.

Late Model Resto Supply has a new 94-95 gauge cluster kit that has already had a white face gauge put on it, although I can't seem to find it online but I could get one for around 100 dollars at a salvage yard.

Thanks.

Default Update.

Ok, here is where I am at. I just talked to a Ford tech with a lot more experience with "cross wiring" or mix and match if you will. He said that like the 4R70W transmissions in 1999-2004 cars vs. the compatibility of wiring them into work in conjunction with the computer from a 1994-1995, he said the difference of the gauge cluster is the way that the wiring was done.

Basically the way the gauges work are relatively the same. He said he has done a few modular swaps into 1994-1995 cars and he has also done them into a 1986-1993. He did say that the 1985-1986 cars you have to use the aftermarket gauges because they cannot be retro-fit wired to the new engine.

But it all boils down to the wiring and he said it is not hard like the transmission issue it simply has to have a little bit of (not really re-wiring) but just hooking them up so that the incoming signal matches. He said that some of the wiring off of the 5 liter harness will have to have the cluster from the new car (He recomends since the car is a 2003 that I get a cluster from a GT of the 1999-2003 - especially if I am not going to get white face guages)

He said I could use the 1994-1995 gauges if I could find a working set out of a donor car. He said I could then get the white face gauges as he said I am agree the stock black face 1994-1995's weren't the greatest to look at.

I posted this so if anyone else was curious or need to know they could have the info.

*I do no for a fact this works because he has a 1999 Mustang that was also a 6 cyclinder and he has a 347 in it and is using 1999 Cobra Gauges.

Joel5.0,

I was told this would work and seen it with my own eyes but after clarification on another issue I am now wonder what kind of hack job I would have to do to make this work?

Could you clarify the other issues (Transmission - also in this post) and I know the only other hurdles are the K-Member replacement - already found a few that work, transmission crossmember also found one that is for a transplant. I know I will have to do custom coolant and heater lines and will have to run some custom wiring and A/C lines to accomadate the engine.

Am I forgetting anything else or missing anything? (I know it helps to have another brain think about it)!

Thanks greatly, 3.8_2_5.0

Other than matching the wiring to the correct senders, the only "?" I would need to check is the signal used to drive the tach.

Thanks, Joel5.0,

Now that I sit here and think about it I don't recall the tach working but he did have a AM 5" Monster that did. I would put an aftermarket tach anyway as I discovered along time ago some stock Mustang tachs weren't accurate.

I could be wrong (I have before) but I think this isn't going to be that terrible of a swap. It is going to boil down to just tracking down the parts and finding some of the custom ones like the A/C lines (which, I know are going to be fun). The heater and coolant lines - if worse comes to worse - then I can make my own with the braided lines.
