Default How do I know what gears I have?

I was wondering if there is a way to tell which gears I have (without removing the rear differential cover) I heard i could read the tag on the back? I have a 94gt with a stock rear end so would that mean that I have 2.73's? Ill try to get a pic of the tag on my differential up soon but i do remember it saying E303? on the one end of the numbers?

I just want to find out what gears I have now as a reference point?

mark the drive shaft to a stationary point.

mark the tires

have a friend spin the tires 1 time

count the revs of teh drive shaft.if it goes like 3 and a hair its 3.31

3 and a half 3.55

3 and 3/4 3.73
about 4 3.90

a little more than 4 4.10

ect.

if it turns 2 and 3/4 times u got 2.73's

Or just stick your foot on the floor from a standing start. If you get drowsy waiting for something to happen, you've got 2.73's. If you grin like a mule chewing on a barbed wire fence, you have 3.73's or better.

You may grin, but not nearly as much as with a good set of 91's or 10's

Mikey,

Which trans do you have? If it's an AODE, please consider the 3.91 set. I did have a set of 4.10's in mine, and changed back to the 91's and the car cruises easier, and the performance would have to be clocked to tell the difference. I personally like the 91's best. I have this gear set in my old Stang as well. It's a great choice.

I still like the 3.91 set. A good friend had this set in his 71 Boss 351, and my Boss 429 could have been had with this set too, but mine came with the 430 Detroit locker. I have the 3.91's in the SN-95, and the project car too.
