Question 1995 Mustang 5.0 has problems at idle

Looking for info on an issue with my car... It pulsates in idle, tries to die in gear, runs fine from 1500 and up (rpm), blows heavy gas-smelling black smoke at idle. I know its too rich, but I don't know what is causing it. It had a chip on the ECU, I've removed it and it runs the same. Only 65,000 miles, have done an AOD-E to T-5 swap (problem before and after). Also, plug in OBD-II and no link, reads ERROR. Check Engine light on. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!!

Go to Autozone and get the Actron 95-Older ford code reader.

96 and newer cars till 2010 all have OBD-II and i think everything 2010 and up are CAN, Everything older then 96 is OBD-I or OBD

Our cars are OBD-I.

Get New HEGO(O2) sensors. Only requires 2. Clean Your MAF, TB, IAC, and ACT. Get a new PCV Valve. Grommet, and Crankcase breather that goes under the PCV Valve. Make sure you have no Vacuum Leaks. If you havent had a oil change in a while seafoam your car then change the oil and then replace everything mentioned above, if you havent dont a full tune up in a while do it now. Autolite 25's, Plugwires, cap and rotor, and iget a new fuel filter too. add a full fuel system cleaner yo put in your gas, and put your chip back in. Disconnect the whole battery for a whole hour. Make sure you dont have exhaust leaks.

If that doesnt work you could have bad injectors or fuel pressure regulator. It could also be the computer telling the injectors to spray wrong but that would be the last thing to test. Do the simple and cheap first.

Good luck

The 94 & 95 years use an OBD I Code Reader. It hooks up on the inside of the passenger side fender.

Just curious, but why do recommend plugging the chip back in? It is a performance gas chip that has a dial, but turning the dial causes the car to die instantly in idle. I just got the car w/a blown AOD-E, but my brother-in-law owned it before me and the car acted the same for him.

Ask your bro inlaw if he got the car with the chip. If he did i recommend putting it back on cause its possible that it was put there for a reason.

I forgot to ask.

What all does the car have done to it?
