I went to remove my old worn out steering wheel and in the process I had to remove my airbag. So I did and when I replaced it and reconnected the battery the light now flashes. I did make the mistake of disconnecting the airbag wires when the battery was connected, but I disconnected the battery afterwards. Any reason why the light is flashing? I then went back over the removal and installation procedure and it still flashes. Is the airbag shot? What should I do?

Hmmm...............mine is fine, trade me cars.

I'm not sure, my light flashed randomly when I first got the car, but it was just a loose wire. I'm guessing you either forgot a wire or keep on accidentally knocking one loose when you are putting it all back together.

I'm pretty sure that unhooking the battery will erase all codes

There's really only one small harness to connect. I made sure I reconnected it when I installed the thing. My guess is that when I disconnected the airbag harness with the battery still powering the system that it sent a code into the airbag's computer. This is why I keep getting the flashing light. BUT I'M NOT SURE! I'd hate to have to take it to the dealer and they charge me a ton to clear it

I worked on the intake some and then go too busy to work on it. When I bought that 87 it started taking all of my free time. Now that I've got it off my hands I plan on finishing the polishing on the intake. I was supposed to get some ported E7s that I was going to put on with the intake, but the guy got swamped and they never got done

Oh well, I figured that's what would happen, but I'll finish the intake this summer some time.

Before any attempt to service any car with air bags be sure to diconnect the negative and positive battery connections FIRST!!!
You could of easily deployed that air bag causing injury or death if you some how created an arc at the connections. Gald to hear that your still with us!
Also if you turned the steering wheel and lost its oreintation prior to removing the old wheel, you might have broken the clockspring or cable reel (same thing, different name) just under the steering wheel.

I figured out the problem, and fixed it. It seems stupid me disconnected the airbag w/o disconnecting the battery. Sooo, this put an "improper disarm" code into the computer which flashed the light. I powered down the system and reconnected the thing, then cleared the code by shorting the poper wires in the harness behind the glove box. All is well now, and yes I'm still alive!!

JOHN it seems I have the same problem with the flashing airbag light but I haven't tried to fix it as of yet. Not really sure how to do it but I do understand where the harness is for the air bag but the part about shorting the computer to clear the code is not so clear to me. Can you simplify the complete process for me so I too can get rid of that annoying flashing light?

im not john, but have you tried pulling off the bat. terminals and clearing the codes stored in the computer? thats usually the easy way.

That was the first thing I tried and figured that would clear the code also, but that did't work. I unhooked the battery for about 2 hours while I was installing an electric fan.

Unhooking the battery will not clear the code. What you need to do is simple. Take out the glove box door/tray and you will see a gray plug on the bottom left of the glove box hole in the dash. Cut the tape holding it in place (be careful not to cut the wires!!). Next, with the airbag installed, and the battery connected, put the ignition in the "run" mode but dont start it and take a small piece of wire and connect the two small prongs inside the gray harness. Wait until you hear a beeping sound and then your done. This will ONLY clear error codes, if there is something seriously wrong then the code will still be there and the light will still stay on or flash. If you need more let me know.
