Default 1995 Mustang GT with smog pump issue

Hello all,

My name is Lew.
I own a 1995 Mustang GT 5.0 for about 8 years. All stock.
Sound like the smog pump is going out.
I read in the forum it can be by passed with a smaller belt.
Is that correct? Or is there anything else that needs to be done? Doing that won't cause any damage to anything or affect the driving conditions?

Aye, like others are saying, this can be done -- I used to do this during the winter, would bypass my smog pump and my A/C, worth a few horsies.

Welcome to the forums lew
I just removed my smog pump a few weeks back and I must say that im still happy with it.. its not a huge diff but it gets rid of a couple lb's of dead weight (especially if it really is broken and not just disconnected) and free's up some extra spin...

its super easy to remove as well.. I removed it while installing my MAC Underdrive pulleys and it took no more than 20mins (the extra few mins in there because i had to press the orig pulley off of my alternator to replace with the new size) With that particular set up (>MAC UD and smog delete) the belt size was 89.5..

as far as any "changes" there will be 10-12hp gain (w/ UD) (2-3hp gain? w/ smog delete) pulleys and my car actually idles a bit lower (in a good way) than it did before.. so as long as your local laws allow for that to be removed you will be fine with or without the UD pulleys just make sure you check your emissions regulations before doing so!

So I will need to remove pump, hoses, and plug holes?

I can't just bypass with a belt and leave pump and hoses attached?

You should be able to. But it will really clean up the engine compartment and make life easier when you need to work on something if you remove it. Plus it shaves a few lbs (Not much but it adds up).

Looks familiar.
The smog pump itself weighs 7lb and the associated pipework/valves weigh an additional 3lb so removing it all yields a handy weight saving, and the extra underhood space makes it so much easier to change the passenger side plugs.
You might only gain 2hp but that's not the reason for doing the smog pump delete.

Hey Lew, I just went through this issue with the forum world and I did everything I could to get a 90.2" inch belt on my 95 Gt, and it just wouldnt fit. So I went the next step up and if fit perfectly..I have the packaging, but its in the car right now so I cant give you the exact part number right now.
