Buy yourself a Chilton or Hayes repair manual at Autozone, Pepboys or whatever parts shop that you have in your town. There are wiring diagrams in both, I own both as they are a little different to use.

Tough problem though, check your wiring and make sure you are not grounding out somewhere.

so I took out the gauge cluster, cleaned out all connectors, didn't help. Got a new sending unit, installed it, still the same problem!!

The wire coming from the sending unit to the gauge must be grounding out somewhere.
