about 6 months ago, the temp gauge went pegging to the right, about 1/2 inch beyond the red. It would stay there when engine off and cold. When I drive it stays there too, unless sometimes I drive it really hot then it will come back about 2/3 to the right which seems about right. Then when the car gets cooler, it goes to the pegged-right position again.
Same problem with mine not to long ago. I replaced temp sending unit located next to the distributor(dizzy). But still had erratic acting temp gauge.I pulled my instrument cluster and removed both connector plugs just to get a visual look at pins.used compressed air from a computer keyboard cleaner to blow out any dirt or debris and reconnected.working fine now.You will have to use a small straight slot screwdriver to remove headlight knob or a nail.2 screws at top of cluster bezel, pull bezel to gain access to cluster.there are 4 bolts that hold cluster in place remove them and pull cluster out and disconnect connector plugs.Do yourself a favor and get a Haynes repair manual it sure helps.
ok stupid question... what's the sending unit, where is it, whats it called, where can I buy and how much$$?
Sorry there are just so many stang questions in my head right now
What you want is temperature gauge sending unit NOT to be confused with the ECT (engine coolanat temperature) sending unit that the computer uses. The sensor you want is a single wire connection and the sender is in the lower intake drivers side behind the distributor. It just unscrews from the intake. It is not expensive.
On the 4.6 SOHC(single overhead cam) there are two units #1 coolant temp sending unit that goes to your gauge cluster is located at front of manifold and on passenger side just behind the altenator.#2 on drivers side behind the altenator at front of manifold is the sensor that goes to your computer. Both have single wire hookups.cost is about 10.00 at parts store.
Just to be sure your profile shows that you are a 4.6 member but you have a 95 which should be the 302.The 4.6 has the OBD-2 computer as the 302 has the OBD-1 computer.
I doubt it is your temp sender if the gauge goes to the right. The temp sender is supposed to get less resistant to electrical current as it's temp increases. If the temp gauge goes all the way to the right it is most likely a ground issue which is causing the current to bypass the temp sender and go to directly to ground which makes the temp gauge go all the way to the right. If the temp gauge was inaccurate but it stil moved I would recommend changing the temp sender. Even a bad temp sender should not have so little resistance that the gauge would read off the chart to the right.
Quick question though, would it be worth it to get the temp sender from the dealership or would the AutoZon / Advance etc. aftermarket temp sender be as accurate? Anyone ??

Well, accuracy to within a few degrees is good enough for the factory gauge scale. I would go with the least expensive.
